    Default More Questions for BobL

    If I had an old rusty 1000 gallon rainwater tank to collect the chips/fine dust, would i need a cyclone and/or filter ?

    I am thinking mounting the motor/impeller outside the workshop feeding the exhaust directly into the rainwater tank.
    Having a door wide enough to take a wheelbarrow and the inspection hole open.

    One good thing is that you won't need to empty it that often.
    Would need to be vented for the air to escape so some kind of filter membrane would be required.
    I am sure Bob will sort you out he is the definite DC guru.

    Sorry I missed this one, I am running out of puff a bit on this thread.

    Assuming you are looking at a bare hole out of the tank some visible and lots of invisible dust will come pouring out of that hole but the latter doesn't really matter.

    With something that big you could use what is called an impactor filter.
    This is a series of alternating vertical baffles (up - down- up - down) in a square or rectangular tube located inside the tank with the final opening of the tube outside the tank.
    As the air makes its way through all the S-bends the dust will fall out of the air stream. The more baffles the better the filter.
    Initially I would shoot for about 10 baffles, 5 up and 5 down -this method is essentially a 2 D cyclone as opposed to a conventional cyclone which is a 3D machine.
    The whole air path needs to be at least larger than the X-sectian area of the inlet - how much is tricky to say. Too large and it won't filter too small and to will be too restrictive.
    This method should remove all but the finest dust which will be invisible anyway.
    You will need to find a way to empty that filter - if you can't work it out I can post a picture.
