Reversing direction in cyclone

I have an issue with trying to upgrade my dust collection.
It is a problem I’ve seen in a couple of YouTube videos, namely this one and also this one.
It’s a problem neither of those videos addressed or realised, or maybe it isn’t an issue at all.

Bottom line is I was considering getting the dust deputy kit from Timbecon.
My dc has an anti-clockwise impeller like in both the videos. The problem is the air flow in the dust deputy is clockwise. So there is an interruption in flow when the clockwise air leaving the cyclone enters the anticlockwise air in the blower.
Q1: is this a real problem or is it negligible?
Q2: if it is a problem, what are the possible options?

a) increase distance between cyclone and blower? Don’t mount blower directly on cyclone. Some other threads here say some blowers aren’t designed to be mounted vertically anyway...
b) get a clockwise blower
c) does anyone make an anticlockwise cyclone? In the interests of time and quality I would rather not try make my own cyclone. But other than getting a complete cyclone kit from someone like Carbatec or clearvue (=$$$), it seems only Oneida make diy cyclone kits.

Hi John,

I used to subscribe to the theory that the direction of cyclone rotation needed to match that of the fan until I did some testing of my own.

Just my 2 cents worth. Obviously no guarantees that this will also apply to the smaller dust deputy.

Thanks for the link. It is good to see actual measurements, although I must say I am confused by the results.

From what I understand about the graph you made, the performance of the Mk2 is better than the mk1?!? This doesn’t make any sense to me. I guess I was expecting performance to be the same or maybe slightly worse, but not better.
Unless the conditions in 2014 were significantly different to when the 2016 measurements were made? Or the mk1 is not as smooth on the inside?

Or else I don’t understand the graph.

Hi John,

Its fair to say that the MK2 version I has a slightly smoother shape which may explain the slightly better airflow figures.
Also when you look at the actual numbers, there really isn’t a significant difference between the two cyclones.
So the point I was trying to make is that a mis-match in the direction of rotation does not appear to affect the cyclone’s performance.
