    Default Setting Up Dust Extraction

    Greetings all!

I thought it was about time that I finally contributed something worthwhile to the forum, so I have fastidiously reproduced a few pages from the Felder catalogue that deals with dust extraction. I even managed to remove most of the Felder references from it......but decided to leave in a small plug for the AF-22 dusty right at the end.

Note that most of the calculations and formulae contained within are specific to steel ducting, and the loss of pressure that it suffers over a span. Hopefully the document will still go some way to helping you calculate what you need for your system with your choice of piping.

Anyway, I'll leave it to you. It can be a bit heavy going but it is also quite informative.

    Good luck.

    My brain hurts.......

    Default Felder dust extractor

Felder won't plug it, so I had better: You can't go past an AF or RL series extractor from Felder. I want an RL160 eventually.

Thanks for that Felder. I printed a copy for future reference.

I wouldn't worry too much about leaving a few references to your business there. You make no secret of what you are or what you do.

Thanks Felder, but it is a bit too technical for me, I will stick with the
    "Suck it and see" method.

    Question Just wondering...

Does anybody worry about (or has anyone done an authoritative study on) the northern/southern hemisphere clockwise/anti-clockwise issue??

    (Think sink vortices)

Is it more efficient (measurably??) to have southern hemisphere DC cyclones set up to spin the airstream clockwise? Or the other way?

    Cheers,
    Andrew

I can't say that I worry about it, nor would I say that I have done any sort of authoritive study on it.

However, as a seller of Northern Hemisphere DC's, I can tell you that there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to have it running, and this has everything to do with the design of the dusty itself, rather than Southern HS VS Northern HS issues.

Essentially the machine should be running so that the impellers propel the chips and dust towards the collecting bag or bin. If you run it the other way it simply doesn't suck.

    Typical scenario for us is someone who has just purchased a three-phase dust collector and reckons it is no good, despite the fact that we have just told them how good they are. Think along the lines of;

"I like the panel saw I bought but that dusty is a heap of ....! It's useless! Take it back and I'll go back to the XX_Brand that I was using before!"

Cue patient Felder type guy -
"I will be happy to refund your money but could you please just try switching the phases around to see if that makes any difference?" (switching phases will reverse the direction of the motor and therefore the impellers)
Next time we hear from the 'unhappy' customer is when they order more dust bags.
Quite simply, our machines are designed to run one way, and one way only. One way sucks and the other way.....well....sux. I can't speak for competitors machines but I'm sure that this would be the case with theirs, too.

I think that as gravity doesn't play much of a role in dust collection then the STHN VS NTHN HS argument is moot.

Way to think outside the square though......

Hey Brendan? I was in a home shop with an RL160. It was wired backwards, and it STILL sucked better that my 2hp Chaiwanese thing. When wired correctly I swear you could see the effect on the weather map.
