my shed, my thinking your suggestions
Think its time to start a thread of my own with all the questions I keep asking.
1. with placing a 2HP dusty outside in a leen too or whatever, what is the real reason.
we live on a block, no near neighbours apart from sheep (sometimes) this 'room' will be around the back of the big shed, so am I doing this to get dust outside or is it the
noise factor.?I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

When I tested the dustiest in twenty DIY and 2 pro sheds, all of the dustiest were leaking in one way or other. Some of teh older DCs were making more fine dust than they removed so were in fact net fine dust makers,
On ALL DCS there were leaks around the bag/filters seals with the filter housing , just one tiny ruck on the plastic collection bag was enough to cause a leak.
On the new DCs the main leaks came from the filter not being conditioned - if for whatever reason you are going to use a new DC inside the best thing you can do is precondition the filter outside the shed ie put the DC outside and sun up a bucket of sawdust and leave it running for as long as you can stand it. The DC will mince some of the coarse sawdust into fine dust and partially block up the filter. It sounds counterintuitive but some fine dust is needed to filter more fine dust from escaping into the shed air. The same problem can reoccur if you wash your bags - this improves the airflow greatly but unfortunately releases more fine dust but it's not a problem if you DC is outside.
On older DCs there were actual holes in the bags. Most of the holes were pin prick holes probably from large wood chips in the plastic bags with presumably folks being too cheap so they emptied instead of replacing bags. The swirling action of the air in DCs also repeatedly rubs chips onto the collection bags and abrades the plastic over time which appeared to be another cause of leaks.
There were also small holes in filters - most were too small to see by eye but if left to run for a long time sometimes a small dust "stain" can be seen
On DCs using pleated filters there were leaks on rubber seals with the filter housing - the older the DC the more likely this was.
On some DCs there were leaks in the hose/connection between the Impeller and the bag housing.
The next problem comes when you go to empty bags. If the DC is not plumbed in and on wheels I advocate moving it outside to do this. If the DC is plumbed in this might not be possible or less likely to be moved outside so as soon as you open the filter bag housing, no matter how careful you are - POOF you fill your shed with fine dust.
Lastly noise - that alone is a good reason to locate the DC outside. Some folks say, " . . well my machines make more noise than the DC" , but you should be running your DCS for some time after you finish making sawdust with machines. The longer you ran the machine for the longer you should leave it running . During this time it's much nicer if that boise was outside the shed.
If you have a fine dust detector you can track down most of these problems but you have to keep doing this over and over again which becomes a right PITA.
I have done this from time to time with my DC ie measured the dust levels in the air coming from my DC enclosure and
The most important thing on my DC that reduces leaks is the clampless bag to bag housing arrangement which provides a really good seal.
In nearly all cases the air coming out of the DC enclosure has less fine dust that the air around the shed so the DC is a net cleaner of fine dust - BUT there is still a surprising amount of dust inside the DC enclosure - if it was inside my shed, that dust would be inside my shed.
The is the umpteenth time I have written this but my guess is it will be far from my last time

I also live on a block, nearest neighbour is 1km away.
I dismantled my old DC down to just a blower.
It is now outside under a shelter with open sides blowing out to open space.
It is switched with a 30 amp cordless remote that I clip on my belt.
It is so quiet that I can't hear it even when using my hand sander.
Cleaning up is not a problem as the sawdust and shavings fine dust are mostly blown away into a sheep paddock.
My blower is only 1.5 HP which I would like to upgrade.( purchased it when I only had a couple of tools)
Do you know how hard it is to buy just a 3 HP blower without all the other stuff.
Maybe there is someone out there who has a DC that is wrecked but the blower is still good?
Cheers

John, would love to see a pic of your shelter, You must have rain protection surely.
It is switched with a 30 amp cordless remote that I clip on my belt. tell me more, Ive been thinking about on/off switches...where did you get it? how much etc etc pleaseI would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

I will not home for a couple of weeks so a photo would be down the track a bit.
Out visiting our kids getting some of our own back. Set up in their backyard, their power mostly their tucker and we get to play with their toys. Grand kids and sometimes fishing boats etc. Had 4 kids 2 more to visit then back to the block.
The shelter is a very basic affair that I knocked up a few years ago.
Can you picture a shelter 1.5 x 1.5 (because that is the roofing I had), one 90x45 attached to the shed wall one attached to the top of two steel posts (steel posts gave me the height) and left over pavers for the floor.
Sit the blower up on some blocks that keeps it up under the roof out of the weather, there is no flashing between the shed wall and roof.
I redirected the duct and a power lead out through the shed wall (seal with silicone).
All done ready to go. Works like a treat, plenty of ventilation keeps most of the spiders out and the wind blows most of everything else away.
The cordless remote is a relative new addition that I got of eBay. Plenty of 10amp ones but from memory my blower draws just on 10amp, took me a while to find one with a higher amperage.
Hope this mudmap helps.

When I lived overseas, in a cold climate, I used a domestic furnace blower to draw the dust from my sand-blasting booth, cheap and readily available. I could probably have worked without an air-supplied hood the air was that clean. Alas, furnace fans are not that common here.
This is on-line in Qld, it's just part of the blower assembly but the ad says all their parts are on sale at 50% off. They probably carry the blower itself, that goes with this bit of ducting. No other info, though regarding HP. You'd have to contact them:

Thanks for the heads up Cleokitty.
It appears that the goods on the Swagman site are parts for motor-homes.
The blower mentioned is not what I am looking for.
Thanks

Here is a 3hp for someone in the right location. A VFD to run it won't be all that much (just ask Bob) and you can run it at 60 cycle and get the airflows we get.

You're welcome

I've mentioned this several times in previous posts. but 1'm 90% sure the motors on those DCs are wired as 415V deltas and cannot be modified to run from a 240V input without a complete rewind of teh motor. It's also nigh on impossible to determine if this is the case by looking at the wiring in the motor junction box or any manner of testing from outside the motor - the motor has to be opened up to determine if this is the case . Replacing the motor is an option but some DCs require a long shaft motor which are not that easy to come by.

Can a VFD run a 3p 400v? My understanding* was that the voltage needed to be 220 and 3p output.
*I have very little understanding of these things!

There are VFDs available for various voltages and Phases.
They start at 240 Single phase (SP) input to 240V 3P output.
These don't run motors more that about 5HP
There are a few 240V SP input to 415V 3P output and these would run that DC but they are rare and expensive.
Then there are 380-415V 3P Input and 380-415V 3P output - these are the most common and run motors up into hundreds of HP.
There are even some 690V and higher units.

Sorry gents I didn't look too closely at the data plate, just that it was 3hp and 3ph and really cheap. We're a 110/220 single phase world and don't see the higher voltages unless living in an industrial/commercial area. I can't recall ever seeing a bagger DC in 3phase 460 volt being advertised here so I don't tend to look for that. Fun while it lasted eh.

Looked at those once Cleokitty but was advised they were air exhaust fans and would not handle wood shavings etc.

Looks the goods QC and the price is right but I don't have three phase (415v) connected to my property.
