Pages 7 and 8 show a few basic fan types. There are variations depending on the use. The radial fan/impeller is normally chosen for dust collectors for the reason I gave earlier. The ClearVue impellers have backward inclined blades, a variation on the straight bladed one in the Cookbook linked. I'll include a picture of a 16" that ClearVue uses in their CV1950 (formerly CV Max). You can see it is a backward inclined, curved blade. 16" diameter tip to tip. It doesn't mean that there are not better designs though.

Curved blades on impellers were introduced to reduce noise as far as I'm aware.
