Sherwood dust separator kit
Hi all,
I was planning to build a small dust separator using one of those cones you can find on ebay (fake oneida) but then I came across this kit on timbecon:
https://www.timbecon.com.au/sherwood...SACEgIUa_D_BwE
What do you think? Is it worth it to save the hussle to build one and save some time?
Thanks for any suggestion

They've got a hide calling that a cyclone, it's a chip separator at best. The performance of that type compares very unfavorably to a proper cyclone such as this - Woodworking machinery Cyclone Filter Dust Collector Vacuum Extractor Separator | eBay. For a collection container all you need is an old 15 or 20 litre ring lock paint can. Not much effort for far superior results IMO.

Thanks for the answer!
This might be a stupid question...but what's the difference between a cyclone and a chip separator? Aren't they the same thing?

For $15 delivered in a week this one is cheap enough for a dabble to see if it would work. It appears to be similar in appearance, don’t know about performance though.

An efficient cyclone uses a stream of air/dust entering at a specific angle into the inside of an accurate determined cone. The cone sets up a spiral action that efficiently separates the air from dust down to about 1 micron. Efficient separation requires optimized air speeds, angles, and cyclone shape and size. Everything else is a pale comparison. Chip separators typically filter at around the 10 micron level

I'd be very surprised if it's not identical. BUT, it's supposedly located in Melbourne; the very cheapest it could be sent with Auspost is $9.15; if you check the sellers feedback he's been a member since 19/11/19 in HONG KONG??? When I used to import these 110 at a time, from the same manufacturer that these current ones are made by, the landed cost was just under $30 each. I would suggest that there's no way this item is being dispatched from Melbourne.
The inlet on a dust bucket dumps the air/detritus mix into the bucket in such a way that significant turbulence is created in the bucket and only the larger/heavier particles are able to drop out of the airstream. The airstream out of the bucket still carries a significant load of solids. In contrast a cyclone separates the incoming and outgoing airstreams, the solids in the incoming airstream are spun to the outside of the cyclone where they slow and are then deposited around the outside of the collection drum, only a small portion of the very finest dust will get through to the vac. Truly there is no comparison in performance.

At the price I took a chance on delivery time without any great expectations and was surprised when it was delivered this morning (Thursday) after ordering on the weekend. It looks the same as those selling on eBay for around the $30 mark. Now I need to find a 15/20L ring lock drum and 2” hose.

Yes, that's from the same factory. I've got no idea how they can do it for that price. What a bargain.
