    Default My Dusty Adventure

Ive asked many question and sought much advice through this section and they are all over the place so thinking last night (rare occurrence thinking) I am going to put everything together. hopefully.

question .... With a symtec lathe or any lathe that had flat surface behind it, can you wise people offer suggestions on making a stand for the bell mouth so I can move it along the bed when needed. Yes flexi hose is required.

I have overhead ducting, with drops to my machines. I have a drop down behind the lathe, 150mm PVC, a blast gate is mounted on the wall behind the lathe at about head height, with flexi hose out the bottom. Below that I have mounted an arm that swivels on a wall bracket, the flexi is just cabletied (I think) to the arm, I can just swing it from side to side to be where it’s needed. I am a bit slack and haven’t made a bellmouth yet, I just have the open Flexi hose catching the dust and swarf and fumes from CA.
Its pretty basic, but works good on my midi lathe, a bigger lathe might require a bigger swing on the arm.

I will be taking my camera down to the shed after my coffee, I will take a couple of pics so it will be easier to visualise what I am talking about.

Edit- here are a few pics. Simple but works good for me. I don't usually have to move it very often, as I only turn pens on this lathe.
If I put a scroll chuck, or collet chuck on, it needs to be moved to suit though.

By flat surface I'm assuming you mean a wall?

A tripod would be a more stable stand but that would need to occupy some space between the lathe and the wall.
A heavy base (eg a short stump) most of which goes under the lathe base would be a possibility.

FWIW My BMH is connected to a 2 way adjustable brake to a towel rail sized rail attached to the back of the lathe bed.

    Thanks guys.

Bob my metalwork skills are limited to rough cutting with angle grinder and drill press but Ironwood has given me an idea....

That's pretty much what I used to make mine.

Tonto, it appears we have started our dusty adventures at the same moment. May we both have more dust in the bag and less in our lungs at the end of it.

Got a bit done today...1 step forward, 2 steps back and 1 forward again.

This is what I would LIKE to do with swiveling pipe...it will have 1500mm hanging off and then some flexi but how can I make the elbow turn/move smoothly

Any PVC on PVC contact will scratch and become rougher and eventually bind.
Adding a lube wont help as it will collect grit and dust and also bind.

Having a 1500mm of PVC hanging off the end plus flex is only going to make the binding worse.

A major restriction is that it also needs to be air tight so it needs two custom flanges with a low friction bearing material (like teflon) between them.

Its going to be very hard to beat a simple supporting gantry and a short length of flex for an elbow like Fletty has on his.

I wonder if an expansion joint would work? Might be a bit expensive in 6" but it's like a socket but in two parts where one part goes into the other with an O ring seal. The two parts can move independently.

Expansion joints are designed for a limited number of uses but it's still PVC on PVC AND they are not designed to have 1500 mm of unsupported PVC and flexy hanging off the end, so eventually they two will bind.

If you can support the swing out ducting from above via a swing out arm like Flettys, you can take the weight of the swing out ducting off the swivel joint, might give you more options/range of fittings, just as long as the fitting doesn’t support any weight. Even the use of a toilet s-bend connector with rubber gasket may work

Good luck finding it in 150 mm size.
