Thread: simple dust extraction

There is nothing simple about dust extraction from a drop saw.
However, there are plenty of examples of working solutions in the dust forum.

This one is better than most

Chris Parks also has a good one.

The down side is you will need a beefy DC and 6" ducting - like I said there;a nothing simple about it.

I improved the shop vac dust collection of dust by a couple of simple additions to the saw itself.
Slip through to the last post in this thread and you will the rubber shroud and 3D printed deflector that makes a heap of difference.
SCMS extraction.
Of course it probably applies to my saw but it may give you some ideas.

Maybe post a photo of your saw , maybe we can give you some ideas.

No such thing as plug and play for dust collection from most WOOD Machines including SCMS.
Have a read of the second link in my post above.

As bobl mentions there is no real simple plug and play for dust extraction as all works shops are different and the work taking place is different

As a basic list:
Work out the m3 of your workshop and get some extraction fans in the roof or walls to get air exchange happening. Open roller doors etc as well while wood working to promote air flow. This all helps to get rid of the fine dust (the stuff that actually hurts your lungs)

At the very least upgrade your shop vac to a 2 or 3hp dust extractor, locate this out side your work shop where possible.

For mitre saws look at making or buying a hood. There are a few job site style ones that fold out that may help but your big let down at the moment is your shop vac.

But it sounds like your trying to get rid of the shavings and not the actual fine dust. So make sure you wear a decent mask

I have one of those, worst dust maker ever. I am still trying to figure out a solution and I have a serious dust collection setup.

My shed is chokka and so my Bosch glide saw does not have a permanent home - it lives on a hydraulic lift trolley under the left hand wing of my TS.
I would like to use a full on hood but I cannot and have spent ages trying to work out non-hood solutions.

In this thread you will see I tried a number things
SCMS extraction.

The initial solution I came up with was a bit of a PITN so decided to use a shop vac in the usual spot AND forced ventilation for fine dust removal (a 1200 CFM squirrel cage extractor fan in the roof directly above the usual operating spot). I could fire up my DC and pull another 1200 CFM from the shed but this uses way more power and makes a lot more noise then the squirrel cage fan. I also have a second 1600CFM squirrel cage I could swing in if a needed to

I also made some mods to the Glide saw collection intake (see post 18 in the above thread) involving an additional skirt over the rubber chip catcher, and also added a 3D printed deflector. These make a significant difference.

I used the glide saw this morning for about half an hour on and off and as we had storms coming in over the Indian Ocean the shed air started out as very clean (PM2.5 ~1µg/m^3.Using the saw did not make the shed air go above PM2.5 10 µg/m^3 (>50 µg/m^3 long terms is considered not good). There is still some chip scatter but that won't do anywhere near as much damage health wise as fine dust.

My shop vac is very ordinary (a Ryobi W&D) and it does leak some fine dust and long term use of this vac will fill my shed with fine dust BUT my forced ventilation easily also takes care of this.
