Sizing/designing dust extraction set-up for small shop with outside venting
Hi all,
I've read most of Bill Pentz's (BP) website and also many of the posts on this forum and have started sizing and designing dust extraction for my workshop. This post is intended as bit of a sanity check on my thinking and opening it up for suggetions and comments.
Some background info:
- Aim: get rid of most fine dust in the shop with DE but also have ventilation via 50cm fan blowing out the door
- Shop size is 6m x 3m and the ceiling slopes from 3m to 3.5m; there are 2 small vents in windows which are always open and the front door can be kept open while working in the shop
- It's a hobby workshop where I spend about 7-8 hrs per week on average; machines would be on maybe half of that time
- Machines I have are Dewalt DWE7491 and DW735, Triton router mounted under a table, 6x9 belt and disc sander, 12: bandsaw, 10" mitre saw and drill press - the dust collection improvements on the machines will be done later
- 3-phase power is available
- Work mostly with Australian hardwoods, i.e. eucalypt
- Plan is to run about 6m of 6" PVC ducting with only 1 x 90 degree bend and Y-junctions for each machine; only about 1m of flex hose will be required at each machine
- The DE has to be located inside but the plan is to use a good cyclone separator and vent the exhaust straight out through a window opening without any filters
- Having done a bit of reading it seems that Oneida XL with 6" inlet/outlet is probably the best option in Australia; I don't have the tools or time to make a cyclone separator
Reading through BP's website, it seems that for a small workshop, assuming good ducting etc, the static pressure is about 6-7" w.c. Adding to this would be about 2-2.5" for a cyclone for a total of around 9". Looking up the table on the website it would suggest 14" impeller with a 5HP motor is the minimum required. The blower comparison chart however would suggest that the 3HP Jet with 14" impeller would also do the job. I'm not sure why the difference here but I'm guessing it has something to do with the Jet having a better impeller design than most of the standard DEs?
It just so happens that there are a few DEs for sale on FB Marketplace at the moment:
- Jet DC-1900-3 which is 3HP with 14" impeller from what I can tell
- Rhino 4HP (3kW) DE which the distributor said has 14" impeller
- Sheng Feng UFO 103B - I couldnt find this manufacturer but there are other Taiwanese-built DEs with this model number and they are all 5HP units
All these are around $500-$600 which is not too bad. If anyone has any thoughts on any of these DEs or has another suggestion that would be most appreciated. Plan is to mount the motor and impeller directly above the cyclone.

Toni
