Hi Soundman
I have not come across any issues with card board drums.
What are they?

1. If you are working with wood with a high moisture content, such as ripping up green timber there may be issues that compromise the integrity of the cardboard or the joins to the metal parts....just moisture or moisture and molud.
2. There is always some sort of risk of fire ( well smouldering more likely) with dust extraction systems and a metal drum will be far safer.
I know people use cardboard drums.....I would not.
Besides, there is a much greater variety in steel, and it is no trouble at all the cut and shut a steel drum to the required size and shape.
Once you have cut and shut a few steel drums you will believe that they where actyally intended for it.

Most powertools have sharp teeth.
People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.

Check out 'pool' businesses, bulk pool chemicals used to come in squat drums with clip on lids, usually painted steel.
A source of 'cardboard' drums could be confectionary and cake making businesses - I have a cardboard drum marked as having contained 'Vanillin' which is artificial vanilla flavouring.
