Source of Fibre Drums for Cyclone Dust Collector
Hi
Does anyone know of an Australian source for used round fibre drums that are commonly used in the USA for collection bins on Dust Extractors. Tried plastic barrels but all so far are very small in diameter for their height. Need a squat round drum thats sealable to fit under my Clearview cyclone.
thanks
Ron

Corrimal Men's Shed shortened a plastic drum Corrimal Community Men's Shed Cyclone Dust Collection System - Automatic Blast Valves
On the bottom of that page is a form to make inquiries which they will answer. You could make one out of 3 ply, rebate the base and top at the diameter you want and go from there. Doing it that way will possibly allow you to make it a bigger diameter. Tape and fibreglass the seam and Robert's your Dad's brother.CHRIS

Hi Chris
Thanks for the reply. I had a look at the Corrimal Mens Shed setup. They have a much higher ceiling than me and seem to have been able to use an intact 200L plastic drum.
I have an 8 ft ceiling and even mounting the motor protruding through the ceiling ( the Teco motors supplied in Au are taller than the USA motors) I have only about 650mm for the dust drum. I thought about constructing a square drum from craftwood but realised that while strong the weight would preclude easy emptying.
The fibre drums seem ideal . Squat, strong, light and sealable. They are apparently used for transporting dry powdered industrial goods etc. Someone must know where they can be obtained in Au

They shortened that drum to fit as like you they could not get it high enough. IIRC it came from Bunnings. If it were me I would go the plywood route as the weight of the drum would not be a big issue. It really depends on the type of debris that you produce, a drum of sawdust is a lot heavier than a drum of shavings from a planer. This in the end dictates the size or if you put the biggest possible drum in then you need to be conscious of how heavy it is likely to be. I use one of those plastic 205 litre drums and it is not light when full so I roll it across the floor and then lift into the car any way I can get it in there.

I got mine about 2 years ago to go with the Carba-tec chip collector lid and at the time they had 4 different sizes. When I get a chance I'll measure it for you.
It came with a plastic lid with a sealing device.

Hi Ross
I am sorry but I can't quite follow your response.
Did you obtain a fibre bin and did you obtain it from Carba tec or from Reverse garbage?
Thanks

Sorry Ron I was replying to Chris.
The bin came from Reverse Garbage Sydney. Food processing companies get ingredients in them and instead of dumping them they give them to Reverse Garbage to sell and recycle.
You have a Reverse Garbage in Brisbane contact them and see what they have in stock.

Hi again Ross
Sorry to trouble you but I am still having difficulty obtaining a suitable barrel.
Reverse Garbage in Brisbane only has a one size (tall&narrow) which is the opposite of what I require.
They were very unsure if they would get any low wide ones. Same with plastic barrels the ones that I can find that fit under my cyclone are less than 40 cm diam & very small
Do you know if Sydney RG still has any that are about 700mm diam and 650mm high?
cheers

Ring them and ask, if they don,t leave your contact number so they can call you when they get some in.
I'll measure mine this morning.

Thanks Ross
The largest I could get in Brisbane is only 400mm diam by 520 high which is only half your capacity.
Wil phone Sydney RG on Monday

I'm not particularly keen on cardboard drums for dust collectors, there are a number of issues involved.
The are a couple of drum recyclers arround.
cant remember the name but there is a pretty fair drum recycler on Queensport Rd, Murarrie, the sell all sorts of drums and tanks ranging from 10 litres to 1000 litre palecons.
They will also cut and shut drums if necessary ..for a reasonable fee.
Also if they don't have it recycled thay can often sell you something new.
I recently baught a new 60 litre clip top of them in steel.
