Super dust deputy
I want to get a super dust deputy because I am lazy.
https://www.timbecon.com.au/extracti...eputy-diy-kits
This is essentially the DE I have https://www.ledamachinery.com.au/led...ctor-2200cfm/# but a 3 phase 3HP carbatec version. I know that I will loose a significant amount of suck as it isnt a particularly powerful DE by putting the cyclone but I am too lazy. (I always wear a 3M 7500 dust mask in the workshop, even if not operating machines/tools anyway)
Is there much difference between the 5" and 6" version for use with my DE? I plan on keeping the motor and bin inside and venting smaller dust which cyclone doesnt collect outside onto the ground

Too lazy to do what?
To answer your question yes theres a huge difference between a 5 and 6" version. However you'll need to think about it from a whole system perspective. ie no point having a 6" cyclone if your machine ports are limited to a 4" outlet.

I wonder why such a big difference in price between the 2 models? That cannot be justified if they are the same design.

I struggle with the bags on be DE and its too much storage - takes 4x bin loads (thats 4 weeks of collection) when full and having just a single smaller bin will force me to empty it and will be much more simple
The 6" version is much taller from what I see online. I cant find it on ebay or amazon - only 5" version so only option I see to get it in Aust is Timbecon or woodcraft with international shipping (which ends up costing more then locally)
Does anyone know if there is a generic version available? It really is just some plastic and would be easy for a chinese manufacturer to knock off

I have a generic (Chinese copy), as the US-made versions were not available before in Oz, and super expensive to import. Mine has a 6" input and 5" output.

Where did you get yours from? Do you remember how much it was?

I got mine from Aldav 2 years ago for $220. He is no longer importing them.

Great Scott! That 6” one costs more than my 3HP dust extractor cost. I expect that for something with those physical dimensions, freight would be brutal.

If you weren't so lazy you could go to Bill Pentz's site and use that to layout and build your own more efficient cyclone.

I have the same from Aldav.
I found a reducer in the plumbing section at Bunnings to solve the six to 5 inch reduction. I can't remember what it was called but needed a couple of rounds of duct tape to take up the slack at the 5 inch end. The other end sat inside the top of the unit and I put 4 self tapping screws in to hold it.Tom

Yep, it's the freight that's the killer. These things weigh bugger-all, it's the size that creates the problem. I hate to imagine what Timbecon would have to charge to freight the 6" version locally, ok if you can pick it up though. The generic one has a 5" inlet and 6" outlet. I haven't had any of these for some considerable time and won't be getting any more.

I had to bargain hard to get the freight costs down for Clearvue but the costs to get them into the country even by air freight always surprised me, a part container load is not hugely expensive so Timbecon would not be paying stupid freight prices.

In my experience you still end up having to empty the DC bags anyway as not all the dust goes into the cyclone (albeit at a slower rate). Also i don't know how big your green waste bins are, but if it takes 4 bin loads of a regular green wheelie bin it probably means you're not emptying the bags regularly enough. If you've got one of the small wheelie bins then i feel sorry for you...
I've seen the super dust deputy in person and its a monster, doesn't surprise me the price tag it demands, the shipping on that would be killer.

Surely the total amount of chips and dust collected will be roughly the same no matter how you collect it?

Total doesn't change. I think the OP doesn't want to struggle with emptying and reattaching the bags to the DC, preferring to take the smaller collection bin outside to the trash and dump it more frequently. Since he said in the original post the DC would be vented outside there will never be any bags to clean.
