Many thanks, BobL
I was stumbling around in my shop today when I noticed some dust collecting on places like on top of power point backing plates. Time to give the place a decent clean after the current job is completed. Mind you, it has been several years since the last proper clean up.
Then I remembered what the shop looked like before I spat the dummy and built a decent dust collection system. Even the vertical surfaces had turned brown from the sawdust. My shop was a dust disaster. All these years later (about 10, I think) the dust collection system still does a wonderful job ... not perfect ... but pretty darned good.
All the way through the design and installation of the dust collection system, as well as the modification of machine ports to 6 inch, my trusted guide was BobL. He was very generous with his time and knowledge, and I note, continues in the same vein.
Many thanks, Bob. You helped me transform my shop, and more than likely, my health.

Anther of BobL's patients here. Tis the reason I purchased a Clearvue cyclone. My setup still needs a lot of work, but then again so does my whole shop!

Bill Pentz and Bob are the two I look to for sound advice on dust control matters, both are knowledgeable and very generous with their expertise. Many of us who have taken their advice are healthier and staying active in our workshops for many years longer for having done so.
Thanks, Bob!Stay sharp and stay safe!

One of the things BobL emphasised during my build was that the length of straight pipe was a minor issue. What mattered most were the fittings used and, in particular, the machine ports themselves. Ronboult came to my shop with his clever pitot tube and tested my airflow once the build was complete. His measurements demonstrate the BobL was correct. Reworking the machine ports was a key success factor for my system.
If anyone is interested, most of the work I did to increase air flow at the machines themselves can be found here. Making 150mm DC ports for workshop machines
The dust collection is worst with my planer/thicknesser, because I could not think of a way to get more air into and through the machine. This is the only machine where I did not bother to upgrade the port to six inch. Some machines, like the drum sander, the small bandsaw, the linisher and the table saw have excellent dust extraction. In the old days the linisher and the table saw were beyond terrible.
All hail Pentz and Love! Thanks again, Bob.
