    Default TS guard dust,

Today I was docking some 100 x 100 spotted gum posts for a mates workbench on my TS. (Yeah I know not the ideal machine for this op but thats what I had)
During this cutting operation the OH guard has to ride up 100 mm over the posts resulting in a 100 mm gap between the guard and the table so some (ie lots) sawdust sprays out the front of the workpiece all over the TS table and onto the floor.

I usually have a dust particle counter running over by the shed wall and have never seen it increase above background for these sorts of cuts before but yesterday I had moved teh counter to a bench about 1.5m behind me when I'm in the TS cutting position. I normally would not leave it there because it's liable to cop a direct dust spray from either the Belt sander or the TS which could damage the counter.
After making 8 cuts I turned around and saw the particle counter was on and looked over to check out the readings expecting the worst but it was reading ~7 µg/m^3 which was about double the usual shed back ground. Within 2 minute the counts were back to shed back ground.

What this tells me is that with the OH guard/hood up although some visible dust was sprayed about a meter away from the saw there was not much fine dust escaping and what did escape was quickly scavenged by the DC and ventilation fans.

this is the part i struggle with.

i always have a heap of chunks and large dust around my saw making mess, from that i just assume there must be a quite a bit of fine stuff in the air. apparently not (though my setup is not as refined as yours so my results will differ)

i've also started trying to explain this fact to a few guys at work that just because they have a shop vac with a cyclone hooked up and they don't have alot of mess, doesn't mean there isn't a heap of smaller (and more dangerous) particles floating in the air that they can't see.
