useing pvc pipe?
just read that using pvc pipe for dust extraction can set off a static charge in the dust and cause a fire. has this happened to anyone or is it just a fallacy from an american site. as ive just bought on i wouldnt want to burn the workshop down as well. any advice would be much appreciated.

Nothing recorded; seems to be an urban myth, has been done to death on here a couple of times.
Mythbusters also did a story on it & couldn't get an explosion.Cliff.

If you're worried, buy yourself an anti-static wire to hang out of it.
I've seen them but never worried about it.
You could always discharge it manually, have you got a cat , or for that matter a SWMBO ? The problem with this is it will only work once - they both are very fast learners.

And here on our own forum, I think it refers to a site that Bill refers too as well.

From what I read there is no real danger. But I also gather that under the right conditions you can get a pretty nasty shock from it. My plan it to just wrap a wire around the pipe and ground it (the wire) so I don't get shocked. If there is some truth to it then I am in good shape, but manly I don't like being shocked.
I think that the fire is more likely to happen by getting some metal into the pipe and causing a spark off the impeller.Jeff
