    Default Venting covers

This post is not about wood dust but it is about venting /airflow so I thought I would be relevant here.

One thing high on the list of priorities during a recent kitchen reno was a better kitchen extractor. The old one was still working but very noisy and near useless at moving air. I always thought it was the extractor itself so was quite happy to see it being chucked into the skip during the demolition. I sought out and paid about double the regular price to get A newer quieter one with about 70% more air flow. After it was installed I was happy with the lower noise levels but not so with the air flow.

Then I decided to go take a look outside, down the outside side of house where I rarely go, to see what was going on at the outlet, which was unchanged as the new one extractor had been simply hooked up to the ducting of the old one.

What I found was the outlet was covered with one of these.

Blind Freddy can tell these gaps are not going to allow much air flow so I decided to make a new weather proof vent/cover and this is the result.

It's made out of very thin SS sheet (extracted from a clothes dryer drum) cut/folded and pop rivets together - took about 20 minutes to make and works a tread.
Finally the air flow is much improved and it is also a little bit quieter too.

I was going to quantity the whole process but as I didn't measure the air flow on the old one before it got chucked out I decided not to bother.

Have you got some sort of grill in there to stop an errant bird nesting? Around here those pesky myna birds would have a try at least.

I though of that but in this case the opening without a cover is dead ugly, The hole is bigger than the ducting and the duct outlet is not even central plus there bits of insulation hanging out of the edges AND it slopes downwards towards the inside so rain or run off would go down the ducting - talk about a crap installation - not done by the latest kitchen reno guys but by the original kitchen installers I never noticed it before I pulled the old cover off.
