just wondering if it is possible to enclose the top half of a dust extractor and vent it outside through a window, do not really want to enclose the whole dc

Can't see why not but in doing so you leave one of the worst things about a DC inside the shed and that is the noise.

You would need to get a really good seal around the upper body of the DC and that could make it a PITA to access and clean the upper bag.

I have replaced the top bag with another top to direct the air(dust) out of my outdoor cupboard, something similar could be done with the dusty still in the shed.
In your case replace the bag with a top the same height as the bag.

If you are going to build something along the line of Gidgee's redirect I'd suggest doubling the cross sectional. A hard 90º square duct redirect like that places a lot of back pressure on air flow.

If you double the cross sectional you may find that the entire dust collector is emptied directly outside.(personal experience)
