Default Vertical Versus Horizontal Blower Mounting

Is one able to take a vertically mounted blower, e.g. existing blower from DC, and mount it horizontally? I'm assuming if it works in the vertical it'll work in the horizontal.

    Thanks.

Unless the blower itself state otherwise it is OK to do this.

    Default Dust Ex modified

    Since you mentioned it.
These are before and after photos of my Dust Ex.

I brought this dust extractor off Ebay.
2 hp motor with a real big fan.
Boy could it suck and it made only 82 db of noise.

But the barrel was 560mm wide and over 1.5 meters tall, on top of that was a 1.5 meter bag. 3 meters high in total.
    My ceiling was only 2.1

I shrunk the barrel down to 500mm so I could use a pleated filter and disposable bags.
It still takes up a lot of floor space but the total height is now only 1850 mm, and it still works pretty good.

    Default Thanks

Appreciate the feedback Mark and BobL.

Your blower certainly looks like a bit of a beast Mark. I've not yet purchased a DC/DE and am tossing up between purchasing a ready made DC and using the blower over a Thien top-hat type setup and venting to the outside or potentially purchasing a motor and fan myself and building one from scratch.

Bigget problem seems to be sourcing parts locally. Motors are fairly easy to come by but fans seem almost impossible to find, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place.

    Thanks again.

    Question Hafco DC3

Not wanting to bung up the forum with a new thread thought I'd include my question here.

I'm able to purchase a Hafco DC3 blower only unit, i.e. without the bags, frame, etc:

My intention is to build a Thien top-hat separator and vent directly to outside. I'll also have all my machinery on wheels so will wheel whatever piece I'm using to the DE/DC.

I'm concerned the blower is under-speced but it's an opportunity to get the blower only without having to purchase a full DC and
cannibalise the parts. My initial thoughts were to get a 3HP unit and remove the parts needed from that. With the blower only option though I'll be saving some money but if it's under-speced for what I need then I'd prefer to go with something larger.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

    Hi Gareth

that picture shows a 6" exhaust and pair of 4" inlets. It's a HAFCO DC7 btw. It's also the demonstration piece - it's now in place with the blower mounted to the wall and exhausting straight through a self closing louvre with 6" inlet feed to the machinery. Also a 6" flex from thein to blower and the 44 is on wheels to make it easier to wheel outside and empty. The thien unit works quite well but it still ejects a bit of fine stuff when you really get into it. Unless you're cutting continuously though, I don't think anyone would notice.

    Default 3hp

Aha! so that's a 3HP blower on the separator?

Did you find cannabalising the blower from the DC easy enough?

yes - the 3hp. Mind you, it's a chinese 3hp, so take the name plate rating with a large grain of anything you have handy.

The DC came straight out of the box and put together as you see it. They are very simple though - base plate with blower bolted to it. Some splumbing bolted to that and the bags attached to the rings. Couldn't be simpler to use the parts in my opinion. I did it this way since I couldn't find a suitable blower for similar money. On the upside, I got the start of the separator for 'free',

PS, I made up a heavy exhaust re-director that I can hang on the outside of the building and put all sorts of sound deadening stuff into it. A fan exhaust between two adjacent masonry walls is very loud and carries a long way!
