Didn't they give you a quote before you commited to purchase? If they did, did they not bill you that amount?

Its been my experience that some US companies bump the shipping rates up to improve their bottom line.
There is another explanation as well dunno how much water it holds. Apprently theres still a bias on shipping/post charges across the globe in regard to the old commonwealth empire etcInspiration exists, but it has to find you working. — Pablo Picasso

Oneida
Yes, I did get a quote for the DD delivered to my door. They quoted me about $35 US and charged me $133 US.
Their website only allows credit card payments from the USA. (Listen Yanks, there are many civilised countries in the world). So I had to email them my credit card details in 3 separate emails, which was like giving them a signed blank cheque.
I have not had any reply from them yet but I will keep on with it.
Are there any trade associations I could complain to?

Your freight charge does sound excessive and is in fact much more than what others ( including me ) have been charged. I would talk to the Oneida people ASAP on an amicable basis and advise that a mistake was made. I have found them to be very responsive to my queries and concerns.
If all else fails you have a legitimate case to get your credit card company to withhold or recover payment for the disputed amount. This is on the basis that you only authorised payment for the amount quoted, and that any value higher than this makes it an unauthorised transaction.
Some credit card companies argue the toss but if it is made plain to them that the transaction is unauthorised , they should do something.

Which would be a fraudulent transaction and I would report it as such.
Straight away. You were given a quotation and agreed to that price. Anything more is not legal. Don't mess around. Could also be "mail fraud" in the USA.
You might also consider some advice about the goods, if they have been sent and you get a full refund (I would) you need to leave them packed and allow the company to arrange pick up. Not your problem to arrange it, just be "reasonable". After a certain period of time the goods could be considered "abandoned" but you need to seek advice on that.
You have between 30-42 days normally from the initial transaction. If you can show you have tried to work with them and you have a quote then your CC company is very likely to be happy to help you out. Companies also tend to get a limit chances. Too many charge backs means withdrawal of merchant facilities. Not a good thing for any company

Update to the Dust Deputy
Oneida have agreed to refund the extra I was charged for freight - I haven't seen it yet but this is the season of goodwill so it might appear on my credit card in the next few days. They say I was quoted freight for the DD in its box, but with international orders they put that box in a bigger box and that costs more to freight as they use the volume of the box to calculate the cost. The girl who gave me the initial quote did not know about the double boxing and quoted freight on the single box only.
The sales manager, Jason, asked me to find out where others bought their Deputies.
" You mentioned that woodworkers have blogged in forums that they have gotten the Dust Deputy shipped to them for $40 - $55. The best rate I could find was in the $70 range. I would be interested in knowing who they ordered the Dust Deputy from and the condition of their product when they received it. We do have some resellers of our Dust Deputy and I am wondering if they have found it advantageous to ship Dust Deputies Internationally without additional protection."
His email is [email protected]
You might as well contact him directly, but I am happy to forward anything to him.

Not much point anyone else responding to Oneida as you are the one in discussions with them.
I was charged $50.95 by Oneida themselves and it was shipped via USPS. It arrived in perfect condition.

Happy ending
I have just checked my Visa card online and a credit of $69 odd has been processed in early January. So Oneida admitted they had got it wrong and fixed it. Good result all round.
BTW, I contacted the ANZ Bank about the overcharge and they told me to fill in a form. I have just received a letter from them saying that they can't take any action as the dispute is between Oneida and me.
