    Default Will it work??

    Hi,

    I sold my Carbatec CT-002VB (2hp, air speed = 40 m/s, air delivery 59 m3/min) as it wasn't as clean as expected.
The performace was kind of adequate but the bags let through too much fine dust. Also, emptying the plastic bags was a pain in the proverbial.

I was looking around for a better system and checked them all:

    W318 - CD-2A Industrial Dust & Cyclone Separator Collector | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse
CD-2A - Industrial Dust & Cyclone Separator Collector
    1200cfm - LPHV System
    $1815

Laguna P-FLUX 1 Series Cyclone Dust Extractor | Carbatec
Laguna P-FLUX 1 Series Cyclone Dust Extractor
    $3199

    CV1800 | Clearvueoz.com.au
    Clearvue CV1800
    $4000 +

    https://www.timbecon.com.au/sherwood...ow-maintenance
Sherwood 2HP Industrial Cyclone Dust Extractor
    $2999

All of these (Except for the HAFCO) are too expensive and I just cannot convince the missus to spend $4,000 on a sucktion device (Especially after I complained about the price of her $800 Dyson...).

So, I was thinking to do the following:
Upgrade my 100mm PVC pipe to 150mm PVC pipe (The central pipe, and then reduce to 100mm as this is the size of the machine outlets)
Make a Thien dust separator drum with 150mm elbows.
Attach the outlet of the Thien drum to a 3hp motor/fan (Taken from https://www.timbecon.com.au/3hp-dust-extractor) or similar
Then have the exhaust of the fan directed outside without filtering.
I would also like to incorporate a remote control.
The noise and dust is not issue as the nearest neighbour is about 2 km away.

So, my question to the forum is:
Would this contraption be equal or better then my old system that it will replace?
How effective it would it be in dust/chips separation?
The maximum length will be 15 meters. I will not use sharp corners or flexible pipe.

If this would work I would have an equal performing system at a fraction of a cost of like a Laguna DC.
I know, if it sounds to be too good to be true then most of the time it is.

Anybody out there who has tried a similar setup?

In my workshop I have a Carbatec table saw (2.5hp), Carbatec jointer(2hp), Carbatec thicknesser (3hp), HAFCO band saw (0.5 hp), Triton router (3 hp).
Only one of these machines will run at a time.

in among the stickys is a section about upgrading your machinery. best read ever.
I have converted by cabinet table saw and combo jointer/thicknesser, yes it can be frightening taking angle grinder to machinery, but you can also remove a whole panel and replace with timber panel WITH 150 Bell mouth fitted. that will improve a huge amount.

If your neighbors are that far away, why bother with filter and bags? Just dump it outside? 6" inlet to the DC and just duct it outside into a box. The filters and bags are only there so you can collect the chips and dust and not create a mess.

If the mess isnt much of an issue i'd do away with both.

Also where possible you need to open the machines up to a 6" port to get the max benefits of the 6" inlet to the DC.

That's a great suggestion. How's it possible I didn't think about that myself?
Now, serious now; I want to collect the wood shavings (We use them in the chookhouse) but I'm happy to let the fine dust blow outside.
I could build a big collection box outside to collect all the shavings and then shovel them out when required.
Any idea about how to build such a box? I assume I will need some sort of baffle to separate the chips from the air.
Yes, it's scary to put a disc grinder on a machine but I'm happy to do that if it will make much difference.
This idea of yours would save me lots of money. Thanks for sharing!

move the chookhouse, easy peezy, they go through your shavings, (not your wife's) add their poo and you end up not having to move all the shavings.

Hahaha, that's a great suggestion Tony and it prevents double-handling!
Imagine putting some sleepers through the thicknesser while the chooks are roosting )

BoBL might have some good in put on this.

my suggestion would be just a large normal wooden box. the outlet pipe goes in end of the box and the opposite end is just open or use some smaller hole sized metal mesh. would just need a little cover over the top to keep the weather out of it. have the front hinged so you can dig it out and you should be fine. you could baffle the mesh side if you find too much of the bigger stuff escaping.

The most important question will be how big is the impeller. Unfortunately good dust extraction can be expensive and a good ducted system will cost a lot of money to install after you buy the extractor. I had the wife of a woodworker call me one day and order a cyclone, her husband did not want to spend the money and she was sick of listening to him cough all night due to the dust he was breathing.
