    Bob & Zelk,

Just read through the post and really enjoyed the thread - I learnt quite a bit.

After doing some testing of airflow and noise levels, I realised that the louvred screen infront of the fan was not doing much, in terms of controlling noise. While the fan is operating, the louvres are open and this lets the noise from machinery escape to the outside. I decided to make another baffle with some sound absorbing material attached. Although bulkier, the noise to the outside was reduced by 6 dB and surprisingly the air flow had also improved. The other bonus is, that the fan noise within the workshop was also reduced.

Default Venting the fine dust particles outside ?

I have to thank you all for a whole lot of useful information that i got from this thread.

I have recently set up a workshop in my granny flat and am struggling with the issue of dust. For the moment i simply have my mask on almost all of the time that i am in there as i can almost never get rid of the dust.

I plan to upgrade my 1hp Carbatec Unit with the DC 7 from Hare & Forbes (mainly due to monetary reasons as the equivalent Carbatec Units are simply out of reach at the moment). Even with the new unit, i know there will still be some dust floating around.

My concern is that if i just vent it outside ( i got myself a louvered fan IWEL350 from Fanmaster (fanmaster.com.au)), i am not sure how much of an impact will that have on the air quality outside.

I have a little girl (she turned 5 months today) and the last thing i want is for her to breathe in this dust.

I know given the size of the particles the disbersal would be almost instantaneous, but was hoping to get some comments before i actually started to vent out.

Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

    Harender,

There are many factors, I guess it mainly depends on how close your little girl is likely to be to the fan outlet.

Constant use of the fan, as opposed to only using the fan when the workshop air is saturated with dust, will ensure that the concentration of dust in the expelled air never gets to high. If where you live is breezy and the extraction fan is carefully positioned, I would imagine that there should not be a problem.

Keep in mind, closing the workshop door and windows will drastically reduce the efficiency of the fan, so, the air expelled may have a higher level of dust compared to if the door or window is left open, anyway that's what I think, Bobl may have to comment on this.
