Is it worth adding one of these in front of the dust collector? Hafco CDS-2/3 - 110l
I have a JET Model No: DC-1200VX with 2hp single phase motor plus 2 micron filter setup at home.
My question is, is it worth adding one of these in front of the dust collector?
Hafco CDS-2/3 - 110lt Cyclone Dust Separator - The main advantages of this CDS-2/3 cyclone separator is the ability to extract and hold large particles and chips before they reach the dust collector impellers resulting in no more loss of suction from blocked filters. The cyclone is designed as a pre-filter for your dust collector. It has no moving parts, and nothing to wear out, clog up or replace.
Separates up to 99% of dust from the air stream prior to reaching the filter. This prevents your collector’s filter from clogging, allowing you to work safer and longer while saving you valuable time and money on replacement filters and collection bags. The mobile collection bin is fitted with a waste sight viewing window and wheels for easy disposal.
Thank you for all and any assistance and advice, especially from anyone you has already done something similar.
Cheers, crowie

Save yourself lots of $$$$ and get yourself one of these from Carbatec and sit it on top of a 200lt bin with a lit clamp.
I'll post a picture of my set up tomorrow if some one else doesn't do it beforehand.Experienced in removing the tree from the furniture

Just did a very quick search of the Carbatec website, and could not find it. It could very well (in all likelihood just be my search skills) be there, but I could not find it.
Any direct links appreciated.

Hi Crowie
The answer is maybe
I have a similar set up: 2 hp Carbie with 1 micron pleated filter, with Super Dust Deputy ...
This is fed by a table saw, combo jointer/thicknesser, and bandsaw. I would like to use 6" hose, but my Hammer machines are set up for 5". There is also an air filter, which goes on a timer when I am out of the workshop. Plus I ventilate by opening a double garage door. And also use hand tools half the time.
This dust collection system to be a stop gap, for a few more years, until I retire and we move home. The cost of upgrading now is too great.
So how does it work? It's decent but could be a lot better. It got better with 5" hose replacing 4". 6" would be better still, but then the impeller needs to be larger, and the hp needs to be greater to push more air along the hoses. Smooth bore hoses would be more efficient than mine ...
I only feed one machine at a time, using blast gates.
The Super Dust Deputy is preferred to going directly into the DC. But it is a compromise: the SDD robs some of the hp/air flow. At the same time, it removes some of the larger particles and makes less work for the DC. I tried the DC on its own and preferred it with the SDD.
I have mentioned all these factors as they involve decision points for you, especially hose type and size.
By the way, that "dust lid" is sold by Timbecon, and is junk. Don't waste your money. There is more to a separator than sticking two hoses into a bin.

Crowie, I made my own separator. The separator gets emptied every month or so, I have not had to empty the bag in years.

Adding any separator or cyclone will reduce the air flow by as much as 45% (Bill Pentz figure - not mine) - you simply cannot tell this by holding your hand in front of a bit of flex. Even measuring This with is flow meters is tricky.
Using a separator or cyclone and small ducting on smaller DCs will result in more of a hit on air flow than on larger cyclones. This is why Clearvue systems use a 4HP motor and large impeller on their cyclones. Using separators on vacuum cleaner is not as bad either as Vacs use a high pressure low flow operation so can afford to lose a bit of pressure.
The result of using a cyclone or separator is you may well have cleaner filters BUT you will definitely collect less air and hence fine dust so it remains behind in the shed and makes a mess let alone any health impact. The smaller your DC there worse this will be.
Looking in your filter for fine dust is looking the wrong place - look around your shed instead. Remember it only takes a cotton bud head amount of very fine dust to contaminate your shed air to above recommended OHS levels. Also the fine dust of concen may go straight through your separator and filters anyway so you won't see it inside your filter bag - this is why DCs should be vented or located outside a shed.
You can get around the reduced flow and hence lower fine dust removable by improving your ventilation by adding exhaust fans and setting up a cross flow through your shed.

Try this Carbatec Dust Bin Separator | Carbatec
Further to my post above here are pictures of my set up - the 200ltr bin, the underside of the bin lid with the elbows (additional) and must face in the opposite direction, the bin lid clip, the last two pictures are of one bag that is full of fines only (its like flour). I've had to empty the drum full of shavings many times but the bag of fines has accumulated over several years. Now I use these fines for filling cracks etc in timber particularly Jarrah as its more natural than any manufactured putty/fillers.Experienced in removing the tree from the furniture

The Hafco cyclone and collector bin Crowie is asking about has a 6" inlet and outlet. The Carbatec seperator lid has 4" inlet and outlet. In ultimate performance terms the Carbatec item would run a very poor second, more a retrograde step than an improvement.
Just my 2c worth.
