Default THE BEST how-not-to-do-it Youtube ever!

This guy put this up on a facebook page as a genuine dust collection tip. He was hailed as a genius.

I won't comment any further, I'm sure you can all see the problems. If not then start reading the sticky posts at the top of this sub-forum.

That's another reason I like magazines (from the other thread). Under a reputable editor, the content is curated.

For the sake of my mental health I won't be looking.

He was hailed as a genius.
They say most geniuses have some kind of mental health issue, so on that score I'd say YouTube has it right.

I wish I could get the time back that I spent watching that.

Yes, you can see what the plan is very early in the video but it gives absolutely no indication of the extent of the crass stupidity in it's eventual implementation.

It is probably just as well BobL chose not to watch for the sake of his mental health.

I can kind of understand using centrifugal force to clean a filter if you don't have a compressor but it takes a special kind of genius to take the filter out of the shopvac while being careful to keep as much dust in it as possible until spinning it. And even that stupidity paled into insignificance when he played the master stroke of spinning the full filter in the middle of his workshop.

Most other people who were stupid enough to do this would hopefully think better of actually posting the video on youtube to show the whole world. That's what puts this guy in a class of his own.

Unfortunately that is not true. I have yet to see any magazine promote anything lke effective dust extraction, they all continue the 100mm mythology for whatever reason park the DE in the workshop.

Reminds me of the drongo who posted a video of his effort dovetailing. Cut the dovetails and pins in the side grain and couldn't figure out why they kept breaking off when he tried to hammer the joint together.

I agree. I think you owe us all an apology Doug, and a solemn promise to never post anything like this again.

Ive bitten the bullet watched under 2 minutes then commented on what a klutz he is and perhaps some research on Bill Prentz and dust might save his likfe.

But then that wally is one of those that are wasting oxygen on this earth.

I thought about adding a comment to his channel suggesting that instead of "putting a top on the box" he just dips it into a sink full of water. Maybe a fish-tank, so he can really get some good camera shots.

Of course, that'd increase drag so he'd need to use a corded drill instead of a cheap batt drill to really get things going...

    I'd pay to watch that...

I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I kind of like the idea !
But it just needs a little tweaking, here an there, and over there, and bit more here perfect.
The real issue is we should be grumpy at his parents for breeding but, that might get me in trouble if I say that.

    Thank you Doug.

I'm curious if anyone else runs a shop vac with an unprotected filter? Protection being from a vac bag or a pleated filter which separates the upper motor area from the lower dust collection area.

I tried running my shop vac without a vac bag once early on to save a bit of cash and mostly the inconvenience of having to buy a very specific item which is seldom stocked, but it failed miserably. The filter clogged within a few minutes and I could have easily put the vacuum hose up to my eyeball without fear of having my eye sucked out. Now I always use a vac bag inside and the filter remains pretty clean, certainly cleaner than my cars air filter.

I have a cheap Total tools vac with just the unprotected pleated filter. I use it for metal swarf. Any swarf that makes it into the pleated filter instead of dropping straight to the bottom of the container falls out when the vac gets turned off.
