1/24 Scale Hot Rod Garage
Hello Mates,
Here are more pics of my scale garage I started in the summer of 2010 but never finished.

And just in case you are wondering. Yes I painted the checkered floor tile by tile. I layed out the tape and then cut each square out with an exacto knife. If I recall it took about 3 hours to layout the masking tape. And then when the paint was dry it took about an hour to carefully pull each square of masking tape off. A week later while at the hobby model shop I discovered they had vinyl graphic checkered. Oh well!

Terrific work Bret, I wont mention the easy way to do a checkered floor, same way I do when I make checker boards..
Love your work Bret, your attention to detail is amazing.
I'm sure if you ask Yonee nicely, he will move the thread to the suib forum for scale models.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

Wow Bret,
That is sure one very nice garage you've built to house some of the models.
I love you ability to document with photos & build notes.
Thank you for the extra time & effort you go to to make a good project, GREAT!!!

Okay Bret here we go... lets say you want ½" squares, you cut strips of half inch slats in each colour or paint each strip a colour if you are not using special timber. so that you end up with strips of alternating colour. Now you place the strips side by side and glue them together so you have a surface that looks like slats glued together alternating black and white say for instance.
wait for the joined slats glue to dry and then cut the slats across the pattern ½ wide so you have new strips but now they are ½ wide and are ½ alternating colours (Black and white)
Next step is to simply alternate the strips so black and white checkered pattern is created. you do this by placing the strips alongside each other and then turn every other strip around the other way. (Hope you understand what I mean.) now you will have your checkered pattern and all you need to do is glue them together..
Perfiect squares and no tricky painting work.
I might add when making the half inch wide strips make an even number of strips so you will have the correct amount of alternating colours. for instance if you need an area of 12 inches in width, make 24 strips in all (12 of each) by 12 inches long. this will give you strips alternating starting with a black strip and ending with a white strip so when you crosscut the strips you will have 12inch strips with half inch black and white squares. then you just turn every other strip and glue them to the other strips and the pattern is created. If the area you need is actually 12.5 inches then make 26 half inch strips.you will see the reason for this when you turn every other strip to create the checkered pattern.
Here is a checkerboard I have done using two different timbers to create the colours in this fashion but not finished yet but will give you the idea. Hope this helps.

Magic stuff Bret.
Is it going to be like an old fuel garage/service station, with fuel pumps, etc.?
I'm on the Garage Journal forum, and there quite a few guys round your neck of the woods who've built their backyard sheds/garages to look like those old "servo's".Too many projects, so little time, even less money! Are you a registered member? Hi Bret,That's a top scale model you are building, and typical of hot rod and racing garages they always look spotlessly clean, will there be an office above?
