Looking at it Bret I would tend to remake the spring and I know how much work goes into the spring so not an easy choice. But I get the feeling that is what you probably what you are thinking anyway.

The rest of the build looks fantastic

Some big, fat tyres would look good on the rear of the VW. I realised when fitting the rear guards that it'd be easy to put spacers between the guard and body to accomodate wide wheels. If only I wasn't such a purist.... (Stock standard for me.)

For my vote, I like the high-profile tyres. Regarding the spring, much as I'd hate it, I'd re-make it. I guess the other option would be to remove one leaf, but I doubt that you want to go that way. Shame, it looks fantastic.

Looking great overall, Bret. Nice work. Lovin' the WIP, too.

Sorry Bret, but I'm with the others. And if you're anything like me, then you won't be happy with the final result unless you re-make the spring.

But instead of the first spring going to waste, make an identical one and use it for a trailer for the '32.

    Looking great BTW.

Well thanks for the comments guys. I think I found a solution. I am using the original front crossmember which hangs way below the frame rails. Most of the pictures of the hot rod 32's I have they have a more flat crossmember that doesn't hang down past the frame rails. This may be a solution for me. Making a new crossmember is very easy. Will give it a shot. Yonnee I like your trailer idea. But I have to have the car built first.

Yep, if you can get away with it it's much better to re-make the crossmember than the spring.

(Meantime, I've got a little re-making to do myself in the morning. You're not the only one. )

    Derek,

I have made some progress but haven't had time for photos or documentation. So here is a teaser pic...

That looks better Bret and only by adjusting it a small amount, I had to jump backwards and forwards to compare your before and after photo's just to remind myself.

I look forward to some more of the build when you get around to it.

    Hello Derek,

I took a before and after measurement. Before the frame was 1 1/8" off the ground. Now it is 11/16". Thats 5/16" lower.

Ok so here is a shot of the front axle assembly. The brake drums look like they are out of whack but it is just the camera. I made drums and backing plates for all 4 wheels.

I got some birthday money and here is what I bought. A new 3/8" bandsaw blade. AS 3tpi, a new lathe chuck, a new spur center. This one has a center point unlike my old one. And a 5/8" drill bit so I could modify my tool post to hold my new 9" bar tool holder

Here are all my new parts on the lathe.

I also started on the shock frame mount brackets. I made a pattern and I am cutting them out with my jewlers saw. I hope to get the shocks done today as well.

Everything has settled down a bit at the house and they are now in the process of repairing Nick's room. Got all the drywall patched and retextured. They are coming out to paint today. Hopefully the new floor will be in soon so we can get back to normal around here. They said they should be done by the 30th.

I made the front shocks and the brackets to mount them. One is extended out.

    Bottom brackets

My first attempt at the transmission utterly failed. Will have to come up with something else. Not even going to show pictures of it.

    First up, happy birthday Bret.

That's a nice size Jacob's chuck. Reminds me that I have to get one soon. I like that new tool rest, too. It's good getting new toys, isn't it? (I can only boast a new wire brush. )

Your front-end is shaping up really well. Nice work.

You mentioned repairs to Nick's room. Did I miss something? What happened?

Thanks guys for the bday wishes. My wonderful wife got me the most awesome bday present ever. ZZ Top concert. It was last Wednesday at the Moody Theatre here in Austin. It was the most amazing things to see one of my favorite bands of all time in person. We had floor seats and were about 15 ft away from them. Check that off my bucklist.

Steve the short story of Nick's room is a hot water pipe in the wall started leaking and ruined his new wood floor and is costing me about $3,000 to fix. My insurance company doesn't cover any plumbing. So the plumbing and wall are fixed we are waiting on the flooring to be installed and then we can get back to normal again. The month before my coil in my house A/C went out. So my repair bills on the house this year have totaled about $6,000. Its a bummer but I guess it was just our time! Things are looking up nothing has broken this month yet. Fingers crossed!

    Lucky lucky lucky!
A ZZTop concert is still on my bucket-list.

And unlucky. $6000 house repairs in a year would do me in. Things can only get better from there.
