Caesar Bireme Romana 30 aC
With plenty of spare time on my hands I thought I would finally have a go at building a Viking boat. I downloaded some plans and studied them and thought the clinker hull was a bit to ambitious for a first attempt at frame & plank, so continued searching and found plans for the Caesar Bireme Romana 30 aC with a carvel hull that was maybe a bit easier.
I downloaded the plans for a model kit, they were in A1 format which some one had broken down into A4 size, when I taped all the pages together the boat was 850mm long to big for my purposes, I like 600mm and scratch build, space being a issue.
Next open Photoshop and scale Plan to 600mm, break plan into A3 size pieces, print & join together, print another set for cutting out patterns. All component sizes can be scaled off plan.

I carefully cut out the keel & frame patterns and glued to the 5mm frame timber (what a waste of time) I should have cut roughly a & sawn exactly with bandsaw. Next issue how do I hold the frames square until the glue sets. I decided to make a stand as if building full size.
IMG_9901.jpgIMG_9902.jpg
This wasn't altogether successful, I should have clamped the keel down to the stand as there was a slight twist in 3 end frames so I removed them and re-glued.
Next will be bending the chines in place then the planks.

Planking progressing slowly, can only glue one at a time 3 or 4 a day. Tried steaming them but couldn't achieve tight compound curves at bow so had to use 3 short thicker planks around bow frames then sand to shape.
This is not a problem as the plan calls for short planks joint on each frame, I was going to achieve the look by slicing a groove into the planks on each frame.

Bow and stern posts only roughly carved as yet will finish shaping as i blend hull planks in.
Boy am I using some zip ties 6-8 per plank.

Hull underside & oar wings took a fair few hours, rough sanded as yet, I now need to work out how to support the 36 oars.
Oars pass through holes drilled through underside of oar wings but no support inboard so will not stay in position, I will try a notched rack.

All 32 oars finally made used some 4mm dowel I had in stock, but ran out, total 5m needed, purchased more 4mm got to the workshop and found it was to small, in stock dowel 4.5mm new 3.5mm (to thin not to scale), same Tas oak same manufacture same retailer. Couldn't find the same size anywhere so drilled 5.5,5.0 &4.5mm holes in piece of 3mm steel used cutoff disc and made a angled cut across each hole to form a cutting tooth then used lathe to progressively pass 6mm dowel through the 3 holes in 80mm increments to achieve another 2m of 4.5mm, slow but worked a treat.
Bit of a disaster with oar holes through hull wings. 1st attempt drilled 2.5mm holes then 5mm, planks shattered. 2nd attempt 2.5mm hole die grinder with 5mm fine tooth taper, shattered too much speed couldn't control. 3rd attempt 2.5mm hole 60 year old small slow RPM air drill with same taper, success. Re-planked wing.
Made jig to align oars for gluing and check hole angles, still haven't worked out how to hold inboard ends of oars as they can't be glued in until last and I won't be able to see the ends with the deck on, need to decide before decking. Progress slow at moment.

I have been making slow progress between jobs, now that the deck is on the hull is so strong my concerns about handling it as i sanded etc were unfounded even though the hull planks are only 2.5mm thick before sanding, now maybe 1.5-2mm.
The bow & stern decorative plates have certainly changed the look of it.
Railings next then turret.

I haven't had much spare time since last post. Just rails & fiddly turned posts, rowers vent slots & ladders & rudders.

At last starting to look the part, 5 double coats of clear 2 pak, sanding and scrapping between every 2 coats. Castle had stone blocks drawn on before opaque grey applied, you cant see in the photo but the blocks show through the paint.

Sails are next, I have tried to make them from linen sheet but not successful so a trip to Spotlight is in order to find something more suited
