You were nervous about posting this astonishing work?
I've only just seen this thread courtesy of Bushmiller's link from elsewhere.
I'm gobsmacked! Thisis your first carving? From memory??! Several decades ago???
I can only say you have an exceptional future ahead of you!
Excellent photography as well! Great use of natural light, differential focus, perspective and props. Like a previous poster, I thought I was looking at the real deal, and it was only the scale of the timber grain that gave it away. In particular, the third pic in the first post looks for all the world like the real deal.
A magnificant entry into the crazy world of wood Greg!
Right, I'm off to slit my wrists.
Cheers
Brett

Hello Greg, somehow I missed this until last night. Fantastic job.
It looks full-size. Exceptional for a first attempt at carving. Well done indeed.
(The water droplets add even more of a touch of realism.)... Steve

Thank you for kind remarks, all.
It iz my first, but it came about thru my mum who does pyrography. A few years back she won 'Grand Champion Overall' in the Bribie Island Annual competition with a picture of the Magnificent Seven.
Woodworkers clubs are a bit like 'Strictly Ballroom'. If you mention that Nth Korea iz threatening nuclear war, their first concern iz, 'Will it clash with the end of year comp ?' (So funny)
In any case my 3 brothers and I scoffed at this hard fought victory, poo-pooed-it. We told her she was lucky we hadn't entered or she would have had to settle for fifth.
Nettled, she gave each of us a lump of wood and said, 'lets see you do better'. Now none of us would know a mortice from a wood plane .. Haaaa .. And I'm pretty sure my three bros have still got their original wood in mint condition. Mine was a lump of silky oak which I rejected. So I was given a lump of Amoora ... and it became a little boat.
tho carved as I remembered it, I did use images off the internet for details.
cool bananas ... Greg

Wow and WOW
G'Day Greg,
WOW, That is MAGNIFICENT, indeed...... I think you need to invite your mum to become a WWF member with talent like this.
And so now the fun begins....Which way to vote; I'm tempted to honour & respect my elders but then I should look after my new mate..
It's going to be a tough decision to make and I'll have to think on it a while.
Thanks for showing off your mum's inspirational prize winning woodwork.
Cheers, crowie

How good is that? I particularly like how the background grain looks like flames, apart from the total talent in the pyrography. Not hard to see where your talent comes from.

The Magnificent Seven is magnificent! No wonder your Mum won 'Grand Champion Overall'.
I'm not pulling any punches mate, as good as your boat is, she wins. As FF said, not hard to see where you get your flair.
It makes me want to take up pyrography. Or give up altogether.
Fantastic stuff, 5 stars.
If you tell us she did it in one night in front of the TV, I will give up.... Steve

Jeez Greg what would it take to get adopted into your family so I can get a bit of that talent. Between your beautiful boat and your mums magnificent, magnificent seven just a we portion of your combined talents would do.
Just amazing.Regards Rumnut.
