    Default The Excavator

Oneye, I think you are right about ram number 4, I did a trial assembly & there is very little travel in the bucket. I will take your advice & shorten the ram.
This is all that was accomplished today, yard duty's called, & that put an end to shed time.

    G'Day Jim,
    The bucket looks great...
Question please; how did you get the curve through the body of the bucket?
    Cheers, Crowie

    G'day Pete.
It is fairly straight foreward when you have the plan's in front of you. I started with a block of timber approx 4" x 3" & using the cut & paste method
I cut the inside piece out first & then the outside. Then it was two flat piece's for the side's cut to shape & all glued together. It was a bit fiddly as all piece's are
approx 1/8" thick. The hardest part was getting the four teeth the same size & shape. Without the pattern it would have been a big problem.

All the cutting & shaping is done.
I will now spray all the hard to get to bit's & then try & put it together so it look's like an excavator.

    Default The Excavator

    The Excavator is finished.
The timber's used were southern maple for the bucket & the track support's. Australian red cedar for the rest of the machine.
The build took approx 59 hrs shed time. The machine, with the boom extended will reach 27" & it stand's about 12" high.
As per Oneye's sugestion I shortened the ram to the bucket to get some movement out of it.
Thank's to everybody for coming along for the build.

Very nice you did an excellent job.
I really like the looks of the different woods.
Not to be a smart alack but are the tracks going different directions?
awesome job would be interested in seeing any more toys you build.

Oneye, you are 100% right, I had to go & have a look at the model, I dont like to call them toy's. But that is only my opinion. I have had a major blonde moment with the track's & I thank you for picking it up. Rest assured it will be rectified tomorrow. My album show's a few model's that I have built lately. The next project I have plan's for is a T/J pattern of the MRAP Cougar, an American Military Vehicle, I will do a wip on this, to be started next year, & as it is fairly complicated it should take some time.

Merry Xmas to you & your Family & thank's for your comment's.

It's one of those Hummer excavators...
(the Military Hummers originally had the tread pattern reversed on each side of the vehicle so that the enemy cannot determine which direction it was travelling by its tracks in the dirt, now the tread pattern is assymetrical)
Too many projects, so little time, even less money!
