    Default Farm Boy

Along side the loco build I am also making a stationary engine which will run on fuel and not steam. It is something they call a hit and miss engine.

I started with a pile of metal that I got very cheap. The bar on the left nearest my foot is 4" diameter to give an idea of size

    starting point.JPG

Some of the large disks squared up to dimension which gives me a starting datum point on each block

    DSCF2983.JPG

Blocks blued up and marked up along with the two flywheels which are 6" diameter

    DSCF2986.JPG

The three photos are of a piece which I chopped off of the 4" diameter bar to make a belt pulley which will eventually fit onto one of the flywheels this is just over 3" as can be seen finished in the last of the three pictures

Boring one of the blocks which is one half of the base piece.

At last I have managed to get some workshop time, even if it is only a couple of days. What with gardening and trying to get a little done on the Rob Roy loco which seems to have taken a few steps back (all my fault). I am now waiting for some replacement cylinders for that project.

Any way the Farm Boy took a couple of steps in the right direction as I managed to machine one of the blocks which will be the front base frame. As can be seen two large pieces machined away still need to round over the top and hollow out part of it.

Yes Keith good to be back in the workshop at last.

Today set up and machined where the front and rear frames will join hopefully get some of the material out of the centre which means that I do not need to set up again as most of it can be done in this position.

Learning a lot during the progress, sometimes working out how to hold and machine features can be fun. Two photos of todays the first during the machining and the second once it is machined. I will be leaving it where it is for the next operation which is to remove material from the middle of the block. When this part is finished there will be more metal removed than will remain on the parts. Sometimes the set up can take longer than the work being done.

Started to rough out the bulk of the material, need to take it deeper then I will change the cutter for a smaller diameter and machine to the correct size before setting up on the rotatory table to do around the hole.

Thank you Keith nothing done yesterday except make a mess turning down a lump of metal for a ER collet holder to fit the lathe.

I have managed to deepen the pocket and take it to depth width and to the position of the bottom. Still need to do the inside around the hole to the same depth and to bring the diameter to match the width. it will become clear when I do that.

Finished hollowing out even though I made a small error in machining but that does not effect the finished engine

Next onto making an aid to help the next machining just a simple turned item

in place on the rotary table along with the part in position. Both the rotary table and the part need to be secured before any machining is done

Spent the morning setting up the rotary table with the part secured to it. The afternoon was spent with a little machining as that part did not take as long as the set up. This means that the majority of the main machining on this part is complete just some holes to do and then onto the rear part which attaches to this. Not so much setting up.

Some pictures of the machining and then the part as it stands now

This bring me to todays work not had much time so managed to mark out for some of the machining to the rear base.
This is mainly to keep me on track as most of the work is carried out using the DRO.

    DSCF3082.JPGDSCF3083.JPGDSCF3084.JPG

Starting on the end that will eventually join the front still need to remove more from the two steps as can be seen as I have not reached the lines for these

    DSCF3085.JPG

And also some more greenhouse work which keeps the build going slower than what it should this is just some of them. The benches are 12ft long and there is a shelf below which can just be seen in some of the photos the floor is also nearly covered leaving just enough room to work
