    Default Locomotive & Tender

    Not a lot happened here today, I cut the base for the cabin & the boiler & also both side panel's for the cabin. The pencil is only there so the panel's don't fall over. I also tidied up the cow catcher. All these piece's are as they come of the bandsaw so there is much sanding & shaping to do before it start's to look like a loco. Cheer's Jim.

    PLD, thanks, everything so far & the majority of the rest of the build will be Australian Red Cedar.Regard's Jim

    Great progress so far!!

    Toona cilliata seems to me to be a good timber for modelling, provided the grain is not cranky.
    It is an easy wood to work and really stand out against lighter woods.

    Artme, Thank you, & regard's to the timber, I agree most whole heartedly, but a question - what happens then if the user get's cranky ? I am glad you like the build. Cheer's Jim.

    G'Day Jim, It must be getting more difficult to find good Australian Red Cedar while it's price would be heading north... Peter

    Default Locomotive & Tender

    Today in the Coffs Harbour area it was wet, cold & raining. So what's a bloke to do except spend the day in the shed. I made the front panel for the cab, the section of the boiler that is inside the cab & put a door on it. Then the roof was completed except for the vent. I then built the tender body & started on the suspension, which is not shown. Last is all the bit's so far just sitting together waiting. So where is the boiler you may ask? I have no abilities as a wood turner so I have arranged for a mate to turn it for me but unfortunately he is in Tasmania & won't back for a few day's. I liked the look of this model so I wasn't going to not build it just because I am not into turning.Cheer's Jim.

    Pete, I went to the auction at Boutique Timber's & I was lucky enough to purchase 4 piece's about 8ft long, 8" to 10" wide & 1" thick rough sawn for quite a reasonable price. If anybody need's some Red Cedar they should try a company by the name of ; MJ & RJ Hodgson in Dorrigo, I wont put his phone number on this post but he can be found in the Coffs Harbour phone book. He has also the largest quantity of timber slab's, of all type's I have ever seen. And his price's are reasonable. Cheer's Jim.

    Jim,

    You are really getting stuck into the locomotive and it is really looking a treat. I really love the cow catcher. You have done a great job on it.

    It gets cold down here in Victoria as well, but as you say when its wet and cold you don't have to work around the house - it's straight out to the shed an into the model making.

    Look forward to seeing more of your excellent work.

    FYI Crowie. Aus. Red Cedar is not so pricey as it probably might have been. From what I hear there is plenty about as long as you know where to look.

    A lot of Surian Cedar has been used in place of our Red Cedar and that seems to have eased prices a bit.

    I personally think the Surian is an inferior timber. It is coarser and more open grained. It also does not work as well. Still, for manypurposes it is a good substitute.

    Default Locomotive & Tender.

    Today's time in the shed was exasperating as I was trying to fit the moulding's to the tender, they are 5-1/4" long x 3/32" dowel. I am using Loctite super glue gel for all the miniature pieces & I couldn't hold them in the correct position without them moving & getting super glue everywhere. So I clamped a scrap piece, marked the position & glued the dowel, then I had to remove the scrap quickly before it attached itself to the moulding, It eventually worked out OK after a couple of hiccup's. I then finished the front & rear suspension for the tender, except for the final sanding they are now ready for the wheel's. Last is the moulding's for the cabin. Cheer's Jim.

    Today's effort was fitting the roof vent & moulding's to the cabin roof. Then making up the cylinder's & rod block's, these will apparently activate the push bar & the connecting bar, which are shown in the last pic, to drive the drive wheel's. Cheer's Jim

    Picture 2 shows the cylinder, with the piston rod coming out to the crosshead and the crosshead guide. Picture 3 is the connecting rods (from the cross head to the driving wheel crank pin) and the coupling rods which connect the driving wheels together.
