I can see what you mean Jim.That looks like a great magnifier.
What brand is it and what particular model?
When I'm fully back on deck I think that could be helpful.
I do have a special pair of glasses - only one magnifying lens but
I find them as much hinderance as help because of the focal properties
of my remaining good eye.

Artme,
The Brand is Luxo and all it says is wave magnifier/loupe, it runs on 120V and has two 13watt fluorescent tubes, one on each side of the lens. That's about the only information I could find. It was ordered from a catalog....pre-internet as far as I recall. Hope that helps. It has been invaluable to me!
Cheers,
Jim
Here's a pic of the whole thing.....

Almost finished with the upper wing. Got to shellac the bare wood added after the compression bars and ........
Nope....not even almost. As I was typing, I realized there is still a lot to do....
Add the upper trailing edge....made up of britainnia metal, brass rod and copper strips, being sure to leave spacing to separate the airlerons.
Detach the ailerons then the reattach using the hinges, horns and cabling.......
So maybe half done......
Anyway....some progress pics.
There are a couple bracing cables that appear loose because they had to be fed around bracing or the rib holes did not line up for a straight shot.
Build note: Some trim may be required to let the turnbuckles align thru the ribs......My intention is to review how it looks after finishing the other parts....there may be more interferences that may crop up.
Cheers,
Jim

Any Wing sauce???
Dalboy, Frank, 'like' buttoneers,
Thanks for visiting!
Okay, so now the wings are really, really close to complete. You can see where I've cut through the wing end to start separation of the aelirons. In addition, the trailing edge bars and copper tape have been attached. I do think I need to do some clean up on the center trailing edge.
Once I've detached the aelirons; then reattached them.....all will be almost done
On to the empennage and fuselage!
Note to self: Be sure to talk about adhesives....and remember to plan on epoxy for critical fastening points.....
Cheers,
Jim

I had those "Buffalo Wings" in the US some years back [when visiting our daughter]....
the menu didn't say anything about needing a fire extinguisher....
the hot sauce nearly burnt a hole in my mouth, couldn't finish the meal...
Jim, I hope you get finished without too much difficulty; good build...very patient..
Cheers, crowie

Hi Grant,
With all the different materials to glue together.....raw wood, shellaced wood, copper, britannia metal, etc..... I've had some issues with adhesion.
In particular with britannia metal parts. Although GS Hypo cement seems to work best, it still does not do very well without flush contact. While installing the compression bars all was well until I started handling the wing to thread the cables and turnbuckles. A number of the compression bars chose to detach themselves. Upon inspection, there was slight warping of the bars so they were not flush with the wooden crossties. Britannia metal is so brittle it is almost impossible to bend without causing failure so I chose to use wood glue that had dried to a paste consistency as filler to reattach the bars.
The critical fastening points I am referring to are the wing mounting bars spanning the upper and lower wings. Since the are all britannia metal I'm going to use epoxy to glue them in place.....great adhesion and thick enough to be the required filler.
I anticipate running in to similar issues with other parts on the empennage and fuselage as well.
Hope that clarifies things!
Cheers,
Jim
