Thread: whitewall tyres

Bob those look great. They are exactly what I am going to use on my 32' hot rod. I have plans on how to make them from wood magazine. Are these your own design?

hi bret i was just trying to work out how to make whitewall tyres and this is how they came out i never made them for anything in particular just seeing if i could make them wasnt sure if the white band was a bit wide or not bob

How did you get the "whitewalls" please.

I too am intrigued as to how you did them, particularly without holesaws. They look fantastic.

Great job Bob. It is just about the same way I make that sort of wheel these days.
After mounting the wood on a backing board,it is only a few minutes work to turn to the right dia,bore the centre with a forstener bit to the right depth,shape the tyre / wheel.Then a bit of sanding.
I found that if I then spray clear satan before painting the whitewall,it doesnt bleed.Only trouble is you have to remount it in the chuck to apply the white with a brush

hi aussie the whitewall isnt painted it is a maple ring the wheel is made up of three rings the outer ring is walnut, maple for the whitewall and walnut for the hub i drew a 2 3/4 circle from walnut with a compass cut if out slightly oversize i then drill a 2 1/8 hole in it using a forstner bit then i turned a2 1/8 maple disc and put it in the walnut disc i then drill a 1 3/8 hole in the maple with a forstner bit and insert a 1 3/8walnut disc which i then drill a 1 1/8 hole to make the hub i then drill a 3/8 hole in the centre for the axle peg the true the wheel up on the lathe its a lot easier than it sounds hope this makes sense i will be making some whitewall tyres in the next week or so for the gatto pick up i am making and will take some photos making the wheels

Great job on the wheels Bob. The only thing that does not look right (to me anyway) is the whitw wall should be nearer to the outer diameter of the wheel and the hub should be larger. As it is at the moment the depth of the side wall looks to deep. But as i said great job and the effect of using the maple instead of paint is just antastic.

I've been thinking about whitewalls a bit lately. Had considered making a wheel and a whitewall inlay, (a thicker ring cut into slices), then routing the groove into each tyre with the Dremel router + template.
Your's and AUSSIE's method would be easier to get right, though.

(I shied away from whitewalls on the current one. Chicken)
