Cast Jacaranda Root Nodules
Found these nodules attached to the roots of a Jacaranda tree I removed from the front yard (see https://www.woodworkforums.com/f14/cl...-block-173551/). As I didn't want to slice them before casting, after drying them in the dehydrator, I basically put them in a small slab mold and cast the them in a translucent emerald green. When set I sliced off the protruding nodules and cast them again in a translucent blue. When set I again cut off the remaining nodules in a smaller mold with translucent red.
Managed to get 3 good 22mm square blanks from the each of the normal molds. I should be able to get a full Slimline/Streamline out of each of the red slices, provided I drill the 2 no. 7mm holes first, then cut with the scroll saw.
Very hard to photograph and show the resin properly, but you can clearly see the nodules, yellowish jacaranda with a then brown bark layer. Can't wait to turn them, but there is a huge line of my "can't wait to turn them" . I will need to backpaint cast or paint blanks with white to show off the translucent resin best.

Looks like several nymph stages of the same bug.
Not familiar with that one.

Yes agreed all same species. Looked up the 5 types of borer bugs and it doesn't appear to be one.
Any bug experts out there?Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Over at Gawdelpus's place to help me slice up some pine into stickers for the slabs I am milling at the moment on his tablesaw. I have a good one, but it is a bit buried in the workshop at the moment, so it was easier to go to his place and he needed a chain I had sharpened for his chainsaw.
Anyway, as a break when we had finished, I gave him one of my emerald green nodule pen blanks to turn into a few Sierra pens (I haven't had time to turn a pen for a while ). Used white tubes to help bring out the best of the translucent emerald green resin, but I think we should have painted the inside of the blank too, as the glue lines are visible in some parts. Great 3D effect though
He turned them, I sanded and gave them a few coast of CA, before he finished them off while I did a few tree trimming chores around his house with the chainsaw.
