Default Problem casting resin not sticking to wood!!

I've been using Diggers casting resin and find that it doesn't stick to the wood at times. Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, if anything.
Also what is the best product to colour resin?

Are you casting under pressure? Polyester resins don't have all that good an adhesion to timber in general; epoxy gives a much better bond.

Have you tried giving the timber a good wipe down with a solvent like acetone just before embedding, and not sanding to too fine a finish? (Polyester creates a mechanical bond, so it needs something to key to).

As MS said Kryn, should be done under pressure. For larger blanks that are too big for the pot, cast in layers, that way each subsequent layer fills any shrinkage in the previous one. Also, if and when they do come apart, coat with thin CA, then just put back together and leave for 24hrs.

As for colours, what ever takes your fancy. I use dyes for that translucent look, solids for plain colours, and pearlex for swirling colour.

Thanks MS and Neil for the replies. Will have to make a trip to AMC Supplies for the dyes and resin, also have to modify my $50 Arnold DeVibliss pressure pot to help with the casting. What is a good pressure to use? Hope the shoulder is healing well Neil.

I don't use a pressure pot to cast ww any more and have had no problem. The only thing that I can think of is the oils in the wood. David
