Thread: Casting & Stabilising Demo

Absolutely beautiful Neil and John.
There is going to be 2 videos as there is just too much information to put on one DVD. The first one with Neil's stuff - stabilisation and casting is almost finished - just a bit of tweaking. The second will be moulds with John's stuff and then Tony's castings. I am very happy with the quality of the video - just need to cut out superfluous stuff like silicon or resin taking ages to pour into a container.
Just for the hell of it - I will send videos to Neil, Tony and John first before I post them out to make sure they are happy with them. That is only fair.
You will see from the introduction of the video (when you receive your copy) that this is the first in a Series ( a bit like Heartbeat or a Rick Stein series) of videos on pen turning. Oops forgot to tell Neil that his services will be required again but I am sure he will be happy to help out.
I am going to start another thread on the videos to make sure that everyone who doesn't read all this thread will know about them.

As expected they have all turned out very nice so now for my couple of questions with regards to the banksia pods,The cedar pod, The Dead Finish Bark, sheoak seed pod, and also the Cholla cactus. what I am generally getting at is can you by all these bits an pieces some where or do you have to find them all in the scrub etc ?
Alot of these items are new to me so I have no idea where to find them
Cheer Ian

Ian
You have to move to the Gold Coast to find some of those pods Next time I got fishing to Stradbroke Island I will get you a bag or two.

The Cholla cactus comes from arizona ,its the dried skeleton of the plant. Basically you can cast any dried bits of stuff that can give an interesting effect, its mostly find what you can and try it ,pine cones banksia seed pods ,small gum nuts etc , just keep your eyes open and think I wonder what that would look like cast and turned As in all things experimenting is the way to find out what works and doesn't ,scraps of nice wood bits ,burl ends etc put in a mold with a colored resin and pressurised as demoed here will produce great pen blanks ,its all about giving it a go ,just another level of individualising your work in your own way ,all good fun though hehe, cheers ~ John

Ok you guys have got a lot to answer for, dam it I've started another addiction
Got some red Xmas super fine glitter today from O/S, hoping it was like Pearlex powder (that doesn't come in red), but it wasn't. Much better than normal glitter, but glitter never the less, so does not form a homogenous medium. Couldn't resist playing with resin again.
Anyway, I've had my fill for casting for now, below are the final products from the past few days:
- Yesterday's flouro swirls in black blanks, plus 2 new ones, one green swirls in black and the other black swirls in green
- Blue and pinky coloured pearlex in black
- The new red glitter swirls in black
- Desert Ironwood cast with black and red glitter
- the final assembled pens
I add the blanks to the "to it" pile

Good to see some pink at last.
That Desert Ironwood shows up as orange & black like a camp fire, that is seriously nice.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

I will admit that I had trouble understanding the big interest in pen turning, until I saw your work. The nuts and the black chrome Streamline are grabbing. Very nice work Neil.
