    Default A couple of casts

    G'Day Folks,

Heres a couple of casts I've cone recently.

A pure black resin poured into a mould full of aluminium swarf from making my pin chucks. Havent made a pen from it yet, I'll post piccies as and when.

The next is white mica containing dark red rose petals, not sure about this one but, again, I'll post piccies when turned.

    Cam,

Very interesting !! I like the look and sound of the black cast that should come out looking pretty smick I think not sure about the rose petal one though did you do anything to the petals before cating them ? will they retain their colour ?

I will report back to check these out for sure

    Cheers
    Tony.

looking forward to see how these both turned out

i tried the rose petals a few years ago, dried them in the microwave so they kept their color, but after casting in the resin all the color was gone, i hope you had better success

Hmm, unless the rose petals were dried and stabilised somehow, they will probably rot

    Tony,

I dried the petals in the oven, about sixty degrees for twenty minutes. It hadn't occurred to me that they may rot, will report on this if and when it happens.

the petals in the blanks i made never rotted, they just lost their color, from the research i have done, it seems the heat generated by the curing resin is where the problem lies, so i am interested to see if yours did the same thing

i always planned to give the next lot a coat of varnish or clear acrylic before casting, but have never had the chance to go the next step

it would make a fantastic wedding pen

The only way to dry a rose is to hang it upside down by the stem in a dry airy place outside. That preserves the colour in them and gets rid of any moisture. Whether the heat in resin will remove the colour is your experiment. Remember any plant will rot even in resin if not dried out properly

A Food Dehydrator works well on roses then spray acrylic varnish and dry well before pouring Resin.
The Rose colour may change slightly.
