Dragon eggs
G'day
I saw some utube videos of these and some at Turnfest so I decided to have a go .
The videos show the blanks made by casting in a rectangular mold or in a plastic cup . Both methods are quite wastefull of resin since a large part of it is turned away . The cost of my resin has gone up by about 25% in the three years or so that I heve been playing resin , so here is the method I used .
I started by cutting a 50mm square of burl with the spikey bits pointing up . I then hot melt glued a tenon on and turned the blank untill the centre cardboard tube from a toilet roll would just slide on .I then ran a bead of pva glue round the end of the cardboard tube . Next day I poured resin in and put it in the pressure pot to cure .I then turned off the tube and shaped and sanded the egg leaving a small spiggot .I finished with several coats of WIP, buffing between coats . I then parted the egg off and finished the end off and mounted on a plinth with 15minute epoxy .
If I make more of these ,next time I will leave part of the spiggot attached as it would make it easier to mount on the plinth .
Comments welcome .
Ted

Ted, just a thought, if your affixing the egg to the plinth, why not 1. Turn the plinth as part of the egg, so all in one or 2. Use the worm screw to hold the egg while turning, then tidy up with a drill, then when you turn the plinth turn it and leave a pin in the middle the same diameter as the drill used that way it can come off to look at, or if u make it a snug fit, it can be pushed into the pin, if u follow my meaning.

Fumbler
It could be done as per "1" but my bit of burl is only thick enough to make the egg ."2"not much point in remounting the egg blank on a screw chuck when it is already mounted to turn it down to fit the cardboard tube .
Anyone know why my posting ended up with funny additions like
and ?

the BR things? You probably used HTTPS to the forum not the approved HTTP. There's still a few quirks with HTTPS and converting text seems to be one of them
