Help With Silicon I got of EBay
Hey All
Got some of that silicon of eBay for making some more molds and I mixed some up today and what a disaster it was. I mix it following the instructions, it wasn't hot in the shed when I mixed it but I did mix it in the container it came in not sure what went wrong. I have left a message for the supplier and sent a email also now if I mix it with less hardener will it set or will it not work

Maybe you need to unscrew the outside wood to remove the mould.
I used corflute and masking tape for mine, took a long time to go right off (2 days) I also used the right amount of hardener.
Only problem I had was I taped the blocks to the bottom and one floated up (out of 8). Should have stapled it from the bottom.

Hey Fly
Mate the box is not the problem it's the silicon only got half of it out if the tin before it set and I didn't even get the chance to fill the box to make my mold. The box work as I have made molds before in this style of box with no problems but the silicon I used them was a different type maybe I should of just paid the extra and got the same stuff as last time

Re: Help With Silicon I got of EBay
The instructions say 2 to 5% and the hardener bottle says 3% so I went with that so 1000g tin would be 30g wich is what is in each hardener bottle so I not sure what I did wrong maybe it was the tin it came in????

Don't know, not a industrial chemist no more.
I'd get back to the supplier and ask them first.....
Maybe the hardener and the tin it came in react together?
if you move it to a plastic ice cream container and use 15 gms it may not go off?
If its ebay at least you may get an answer before the weekend finishes.
Which ebay seller was it. I got mine from "sounds-creative".

Hey Ian, I think too much harder there for sure. 1 - 1.5 % is all I use and never had any problems. It still sets fine just takes a little longer but that gives you more time and allowes you to pour the mixture properly. Have you got the videos from last years casting demo? If so have a look at them there is a segment there by John which covers silicon moulds that might be helpful. You can always give me a ring as well if you get stuck.

If you measured by weight it should have been Ok, so not sure what went wrong. Don't throw out that set silicon though, cut it up into little pieces and use it in the next pour, the new stuff will bind it all together.

This stuff goes off pretty quick ,My first one was about 15 mins I think, using the scales and recommended catalist , I now only use a max 2% by weight ,sometimes less as if you are slow to mix it can start going off before you pour, this doesn't allow time for bubbles to rise Usually you can pour the mold and take it apart and use it in the same day for casting Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!
