Thread: First Pen Blank

    Default First Pen Blank

    Hi All,

Very keen on casting my own unique pen blanks... I did a lot of casting as a youth, but that was for models, badges and the like, so coming to it again almost 30-years later, I'm going through a learning curve once again...

My first attempt resulted in an extremely hot heaving spitting, steaming mess crackling and cracking with noxious fumes pumping out into the air. However I've prepared well and already have breathing kit (Trend Airshield Pro), so was ok. I know I added far too much hardener...

The next day I broke it up into chunks, dropped it into a mold and re-cast it with a flesh colored mix binding it. This is the result, and I'm pleased to say it's my first successful batch of pen blanks... here's one blank from the five I produced. I think it will make very unique pens. What do you think?

Cant wait to get some more on the go... I'll post a picture of my equipment in another thread.

    Cheers, Chrome

Nothing is ever lost hehe, just takes on new life The mixes vary from time to time weather temp thickness of cast etc, time will tell you when to add more catalyst and when to add less ,keep in mind that to be accurate with percentages you need to weigh your components ,100 mills of resin has a different weight factor than 2 mills of catalyst. which at first glance is the 2% recommended in most cases. So weigh your resin then calculate your % of catalyst by weight . 1.5 % works most times It is a fun learning curve though hehe, and opens up endless variations and possibilities , enjoy the journey : Cheers ~ John

Thanks for the advice, I've just ordered a set of scales to measure the resin and catalysts.

Thought you might like to see how it turned out... So, here's the pen from my first ever successful cast blank. An Americana 24kt Gold Fountain Pen... Pretty different I think...

Nice work chrome My question is where can you get scales that can measure that small of amount to weigh resin but most of all catalyst ?

Ian try the $2 shops often they have digital kitchen scales Sue uses a set for weighing my food portions (her fibres of wool)

Catalyst is measured by eye dropper or syringe Ian or medicine cups and you know where you can get those from.

    Ian,
I have two sets of digital scales that I bought on eBay. One does only up to 500 grammes in 0.01 gram increments and the other does up to 5 kilos in 0.1 gram increments, so I have it covered. They were each only about 5 or 6 UKP including batteries IIRC.

    Cheers, Chrome
