    Default Pyrex warning

    PYREX WARNING FOR CASTING

I mixed casting resin almost 2 weeks ago in a Pyrex measuring jug. After the resin dried I put the jug back into the shed to store it away until next time. This afternoon I thought I would give the shed a good clean up as there isn't much better to do in this weather. That's when I found glass everywhere. The pyrex jug had exploded. No, it hadn't fallen from the shelf or been hit with anything. All I can think of is the resin has hardened inside it and contracted to a stage where the glass went boom

The same thing did not happen with the plastic measuring jugs I used for different types of resin.

Hmm, Pirex can take heat no issues, so shrinkage would be the only reason but I still have doubts, especially considering it would have been just a very thin layer (assuming the jug was basically empty).

With the wet weather the rats and snakes look for dry areas. Sure it wasn't knocked over by a critter

Resin should never be mixed in glass/pyrex always in plastics............never in styrene cups as they can ignite due to the heat.

Pyrex/glass will only take so much heat and even less expansion especially if it has seen lots of use in the microwave, as I have been told by a pro from Crown Corning the early stuff (prior 80's) was never made to be used in microwaves at all.

Resin does expand prior shrinkage and the heat generated can burn hands.

Glass/pyrex becomes tempered with heat and more so over time. If it hadn't fall off the shelf as you said even a slight tap of something hitting it could shatter it.

Rats in my shed???? No it wasn't rats or those damn snakes The base of the Pyrex jug was still on the top shelf of my shelves - it was shattered like a windscreen. Most of the rest of the glass was on the top shelf too with a few smaller bits over the shed floor. It was a brand new jug. This was the first time I had used it. It can only be: (a) faulty jug; or (b) resin shrinkage or expansion and the weather change that brought the temperature down quickly. My guess is (b). It didn't happen to my plastic jugs and I will use only them in future.

The warning was for those who might use Pyrex. It would not have been nice to be in the shed when it went bang as some bits of glass were a metre from the shelf.
