    Default re pump

G,day just wondering if anyone has ever tried a milking machine pump for vacuum , and if they pull enough vac .
i want to get into the casting and stablising ( been selling quite a few pens the last few years and i have some blanks that i have been leaving unused because of not have vac or pressure set up ), i have a pressure pot ready to go i will build a vac chamber (dont have any resin though , i will have to grab some of that stuff from the green shed for now ) , i have some cactus juice ordered so apart from a heap of fittings which i can probably make on the lathe all i need is a vacuum pump .
i already have an old alfa laval small milking machine , its a rotary vane pump was powered by a honda but i have removed that and retro fitted a lekky motor. what i dont have is a vac gauge . i will be in toowoomba tomorrow so while there i can get a gauge from somewhere ( dont know where yet though ).
so any pump gurus in here that know how much vac a milking machine can pull???.

According to professor Google milking machine vacuum pumps operate at 50kpa around 14" Mercury. You could make a simple manometer with clear tube to test it is still a working unit. 20" down and 20" up should suffice now you know the standard operating pressure

If that is all it pulls, no it's not enough, you need >28" for stabilisation. Relatively cheap on Ebay for a 2 stage 3cfm unit like this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/High-Effi...item33a22621f5

You only cast with pressure, not vacuum, accept for pure resin casts just to remove the bubbles out of your mix.

yeah but milking machines operate with restrictors and pulse valves in the system which pulses the milk flow rather than a continual suck .this one had a 2 outlet stainless diaphram valve in the line , it would be spring load to operate at a set vac then release . well i think thats what it does .
anyway thanks for the replies guys .

ok picked up a vacuum gauge on wednesday from toowoomba fitted it yesterday and ran the pump messed around with a few different pullys and the best i could get the old milking machine to pull was 24 and that was probably running it a bit quicker than it likes to run at . so i will be buying a vac pump off ebay by the looks .
i also bought a handy little oven from aldi 79 bucks and a dehydrator from the good guys, went a bit upmarket on that one $190 .
this pump appeals to me .

oh yeah bought some polycarbonate sheet from the big green shed 400x400x12.5mm was going to make a tank with that then after rethinking i rekon i will just make 2 opposing sides with that and the other 2 sides from well sealed timber that should make gluing easier if i route a rebate for the poly sheet to sit in .

Hate to tell you but Polycarbonate reacts with Cactus Juice (and probably others) and the clear turns to white. So unless you are using it as a lid on a SS/metal bucket/tank type I would advise against it.
