    Default New silicone mold

I looked around for a mold to do the Phoenix tubes ,they are about 6mm longer than standard sierras, in the end I had to make my own did this one today used 600 grams of silicone ,a bit more than needed, but was not sure how this would come out as it's from a different source from my usual supplier. Turned out good very fast to go off ,about 15 mins ,if that its about as firm and solid as the blue ones from overseas suppliers some of us have ,overall I am happy with the results ,got a couple of snake skins tubed up ready to cast ,will do a couple more tubes and try a cast tomorrow Cheers ~ John
Not trimmed as my scalpal seems a bit blunt, will trim when full of acrylic hehe.

Any details on whose silicone it is and where we can get some.
The stuff I used to get for molding lead was red.

Fly ,I don't think you can cast lead with this (it's quite firm, it has a shore hardness of approx 26A. The molds that it produces are firm but still maleable if that makes sense. it can withstand up to 200degrees celsius.)
Its about half the price of barnes and other stockists and available on E-bay from this Aussie seller
Hope that helps cheers ~ John

I didn't want it for lead. I was just saying that the stuff I used to get made supersmooth lead molds and had a 300 degree range. Lead is 305 or 310 so you could only get about 12 castings before the silicone got to brittle.
I think 10 years ago I paid 60 bucks for 1 litre so your one for 2 litres is ok price to me.
26A on a durometer is quite soft, I think the red stuff I had was about 55-60 Duro from the feel.
(Used to be industrial rubber chemist before I went to IT)

I'd like to make some pen molds as well.
    Thanks

Thanks for that info Fly, You should have no trouble with the usage of this stuff , I can only compare it with molds I already have and this feels about the same as the ones bought from the states. The more of the work we can do for ourselves adds to the enjoyment of the craft ,and hopefully saves a dollar or two in the process hehe cheers ~ John
I got some high temp red silicone for sealing engine manifolds ,so probably a similar product you used for molding your lead, but not cheap hehe.

G'day John. So the blue stuff is a alternative to pinkysil ? Obviously the mixing ratio is different though ( 1:1 with pinkysil). The last 2kg pinkysil I got was $126

    Cheers, Alex.

Alex, I have never used pinkysil ,and at this time only about 1 kg of the blue stuff ,so I really can't compare the 2 products, I have bought a few pen casting molds from the USA and the blue seems about the same consistancy so fine for my purposes . It mixes like PR ratios 2-5 % of the activator . Its a creamy color which when mixed with the blue activator you can see when it's fully mixed. Gives a little more working time ,but you can make a mold and cast in it on the same day Havn't tried post curing but supposed to take 200c temps. so should be fine for PR at 100c .It seems to flow well and reproduce faithfully ,so in your situation could be a suitable replacement ,certainly worth a look at the price Great work on your videos by the way cheers ~ John

Cool John. I'll give it a go. Worth a shot at that price as its the main cost driver in production.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

That is certainly a much better price than I have seen before John.

Finally got around to buying some of that silcone today John. Thanks for the link. I will make up a couple of special size moulds to go with the ones I got from the US. What is the stuff you spray on the inside of silicone and timber moulds as a release agent?

I got some of the silicon from them straight after the casting demo - cant wait to try casting my owl moulds and then my own blanks.
