    Default Smoked wood

    Dear All,

I would like to ask if anybody has esperience with smoking wood as a stabilizing procedure. I heard this from a musical instruments maker (flute maker) who uses to smoke his rough wood to stabilize it and to prevent long pieces to warp (this happens often with boxwood). Thank you an happy Christmas time to all!

Can't say I have even heard of it but can't see how it would stabilise the wood in a pen blank terminology. It might however help with minimising cracks whilst drying, sort of like kiln drying.

Smoking creates heat. Heat dries the timber.

Don't know if it would help stabilize the timber but if you use Hickory to smoke it and get hungry - wait until it's tender.

    Sorry, couldn't help myself
