Stabelising Pen Blanks
Hi all,
I am looking for some help.
I recently received a video on stabelising pen blanks from one of the members and whilst i found it very interesting i am now ready to put it into practice. Problem no1 Where do i purchase the necessary gear to do the job. I have some very beautiful blanks of North Queensland rain forest Black Palm and when i figure out how to get them on to a post i will send off some photos of them. The only problem with them is that without stabelising them they are too difficult to turn as they disintergrate all too frequently. Hense the need for me to stabelise them so that i will not go insane. If someone can advise me as to where i can purchase the necessary gear i would be grateful.
Cheers.
John Doyle

Hi John, I am sure you will get better advice regarding stabilising Black palm than I could offer as I have never turned any. However I get by flooding with thin ca on all sorts of blanks, some of them are really soft and punky root sections etc. I know Black Palm has been discussed on the pen turning forums a few times so a search should find some info.

If its the vid I think it is of Neil then this is where he gets the cactus juice,
He's bound to pop in and let us know which one to get.
TurnTex Woodworks - MesquiteMan's Cactus Juice
there is also wood stabilizer at bunnies for 40 bucks for 4 litres I think.
The container you can get from link above or we need Neil to let us know where he got his made, and order a few in one hit (I need one).
I got a local quote and they wanted 400 dollars to make one for me.

Neil got his new vaccuum chamber made on the gold coast and from memory itbwas around $200 plus fittings which is probably a better and cheaper option that getting one from Curtis (Mesquite man), as I ordered one last november and are still waiting so I've given up.

it is an expensive thing to get into Ihave one of the chambers made but curtis and it did take me some time to get the chamber and also the juice in quite expensive and then you have the postage cost on to of that which would give you a total of between $200 to $250 then you have to either make (don't as me how but it can be done) or fork out another $200 + for a vacuum pump and fittingsso as you can see it is not cheap to get into.
As trevor said I am sure neil will chip in soon as he knows far more about it than me i just remembered I forgot to add the small toaster oven which could be another $50
I hope this has helped a little
Cheers Ian
