Default Do I need to stabilise...

    Hi folks,
I have recently been turning some pens from pine and red cedar and finishing with CA. After a short time of general use, the pens seem to become dented and marked.
I am finishing with 16 coats of thin CA.
Would this wood benefit from being stabilised prior to turning? Would it make these pens made from naturally soft woods more durable?
    Thanks.
    Jon.

AFAIK, no. Not with the methods available to most hobbyists, anyway.

It does make timber marginally harder, but not enough so that the end user would notice any real difference. ie. the pens will still mark under thumbnail pressure. For many of us stabilising is more to make the wood workable rather than adding durability to the finished product.

(There are products & equipment that can do this, of course. But the prices tend to be absolutely ridiculou$. )
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
