Default For those using LuciClear casting epoxy

I received an order of LuciClear casting epoxy today from Boat Craft Pacific and it contained an information sheet regarding fish eyes or crawling caused by contamination from stearated sandpapers. This applies to all their LuciClear, Bote-Cote and Aquacote products.

I couldn't find this info when I searched the 'Casting and Stabilization' forum so I've scanned the info sheet and attached it below.

    Hope this is of assistance

I use the red stuff from Bunnies all the time and never had an issue.

I do wipe down with metho before casting and use another brand of resin though

Just to clarify, I haven't had any issues with LuciClear, I think it is a good product. But then again I am mainly using it to fill voids and cracks in joinery timber, not for coating sanded surfaces.

I was merely passing on the information I received with my last order.

how bizarre, I wouldn't bother with a product that claims its affected like that.
I've just changed resins but haven't used it yet, hope its not that one!

This is a problem with furniture finishes too, not just epoxy. Fish eye and orange peel in furniture is due to contamination from among other things, silicone. They can stop it in spray lacquers etc by putting in fisheye reducer, a product containing of all things silicone. Once they start using it they have to keep using it forever as it permanently contaminates the spray equipment. A very good reason to keep silicon lubricants, mould releases and waxes with it out of the shop altogether. I can see how stearates in sandpaper can become a problem with epoxies and avoiding it on projects that will have epoxy applied in some fashion is a good idea. I do think it is more of a surface coating problem than with casting where we turn away much of the blank. Stearate coated sanding dust adhering to things being encapsulated might be a problem when cast. Perhaps contributing to bubbles but I am speculating there.

I’ve used the Luci Clear for a couple of projects with great results. I was worried when I read about the sandpaper as I use a mix of papers but I haven’t had any problems. If you’ve turned cleanly with sharp tools you may not need much sanding anyway.
I was very impressed with the lack of bubbles despite my inexperience and the crystal clear results filling voids in turned grasstree are impressive.
I have no connection nor inside knowledge but I think that Bote Cote are a very technical mob and they were most likely just being very fair in declaring a possible problem.
