Pistachio Shells.
Hi everyone, need some help please? A mate is doing me a favour casting up some blanks using Pistachio Shells. I am not sure what resin he has used, but the 1st blank didn't stick to the shells, so he washed them, dryed thoroughly and recast. 2nd blank was better, but I am still lifting the resin out of the shells.
Any idea how to remove the oil in the shells or should we just give it away if it won't work.
Thanks,
Rgds,
Crocy.

I take it that the resin coming out is from the inside of the shells? If so, you're probably right about the oil.
Maybe soak them in an acetone solution for an hour then dry - I have no idea of the impact on the shells themselves but I think it would break down the oil.

I would try Acetone or one of the auto paint solvents but on a small sample of shells first. If it works without altering the colour then you can always eat more nuts with the logical excuse (well, logical to me anyway) that you need more shells.

The guy that did the castings is a knife maker and I give him all the offcuts from my milling. During a conversation I showed him a photo of some pepper grinders made from the shells in green resin that I was thinking of making. I had eaten about 6kg of nuts for the project then I found out that the resin is not food safe, so I decided not to proceed. He has made 2 castings and neither has worked, so I will give the Acetone a go.
Thanks guys,
Crocy.
