Well I have produced the final veneers, and have started gluing them to the core. I am right at my limit for materials - thank god for japanese pull saws with a narrow kerf! Bandsaw threw one of them across the shed - took ages to find it, and minimal damage, which is great - gives me a lot of confidence in the strength of the glueup of the veneer. I still bought a couple of tubes of superglue!
I will be uploading a video later this evening about cutting a thread into a wood dowel, and have included a brief view of the veneers in that if anyone is interested.
Thanks for everyones advice, and well wishes (and false leads )
I now have lot of appreciation about the price, and manufacture of those box lid inlays we see sold at the show - the amount of timber they turn to dust to produce those thin strips must be amazing!"Clear, Ease Springs"

I'm sure you will come up with something spectacular nevertheless. It is still quite likely that I won't be able to pull it off, but it has been fun trying!
The video is now up fwiw."Clear, Ease Springs"

Wow ... the competition seems to have heated up since I last had time to drop in. I have made a couple of curvy wave pens now since being inspired with the July pics and a trial run for diamonds .... hopefully I can pull it off again with the real woods.... used marri and jarrah .... cool!
Yes Toni, diamonds in fabric is easy by comparison, I can do it in cakes too ... wood is a bit more challenging!

Being "All In", it comes down to the cards. So far the flop has been less than satisfactory, the turn was a shocker, and now I need 1 card for a gut shot straight draw or I'm going to be out

I was a bit worried about wrapping a veneer around souch a tight radious, so I decided to try the more traditional segmental form. I thought I would post what I have done so far so as to give others ideas as it seems to have worked.
Yesterday I started by cutting strips of timber that were approximately 3mm tapering back to nothing at 20 degrees on my bandsaw (photo 1 - this was a reject, wrong angle and not cut to zero, but gives you the idea).
Then I glued (with CA) 3 strips (1 of each timber). After a while I then glued 3 sets of the 3 strips together to form a half circle. Did a bit of sanding to ensure flat surface, then glued 2 halves together (sorry, I forgot to take a photo) to form a rough dowel of sorts.
At that point I drilled a 7mm hole through it so I could insert a brass sleeve for assembly - I intended redrilling with the 3/8 drill for a Polaris pen. I cut the dowel square again to help alignment before cutting it into discs 2mm thick (photo 2). I then glued the discs on the 7mm sleeve rotating each disc by one square. I was also short of timber, so used some ebony at each end. The last photo is the glue up with PVA to ensure it was all lined up OK (CA would have been too quick) and let dry over night.
Today I redrilled the center for the Polaris sleeve and started to turn. Looks Ok , although the squares do vary a bit due to my slack saw work . I will apply the finish, assemble and post a piccy when finished.
