    Default Only took 26 years!

While looking at ways to make my shed more 'back-friendly' after my last op' I bought a cheap 'Hi-vise' kit from China but when it turned up I realised my main workbench wasn't really strong enough to support one . . . so I decided it was time to ditch the old general purpose bench I made 26 years ago and shout myself a proper woodworking bench.
    Out with the old . . .

Bought the Cadaghi for the top from our club and the Bloodwood for the base from one of the members as I didn't have any dimensional timber big enough. Next expense was the leg vise - $20 for an old Oz-made screw and $30 for some 10x40mm flatbar for the criss-cross and the hub/T-bar etc I made from scraps. Might not be double-leading screw like the Benchcrafted stuff but it still runs about 30 to 35mm on a spin . Didn't like the idea of the top being full of holes for small stuff to disappear through so I only put tool-slots towards the leg-vise end and didn't even think about a tail-vise when my old bench vise will do the job for me perfectly and be more versatile!

And in with the new . . .

And as Murphy's law stipulates, the first projects I have been given since I installed it have all been steel stuff so I have even had a chance to scratch the top up yet

    TTT,
What an amazing looking bench, love the simple yet practical nature of it.

    Cheers Matt.

    what?

No 16-month agonised process.... just boom pop and its done?

    How unconventional!

I had to look up Cadagi. It seems like a fantastic tree. It grows so fast. A weed, but a useful one

The Cadaghi surprised us really. We were given the logs in a 'job-lot' from the local Ag college many years ago before it closed and we milled it up without knowing if it would be any good at all. Turns out to be very similar to Tassie Oak to work with so we are looking really hard to get some more logs at present - lots growing around town but none we have been able to snavvle . . . . yet!

Well done - I love the way you built a perfectly functioning vice etc and that x-piece from scratch. Looks great too.
5 years per leg and six for the top - about my pace.

Better late than never. Great looking bench so perhaps the long wait was worth it.
    Regards
