My absolutely NO WIP at all - Workbench
Appologies for the frivolous thread
In my search for gear to start doing some woodworking I found this at an auction the other day and couldn't resist.
I bought it mainly for the 250 x 50 x 3mtr hardwood tops. The legs were found wanting in any search for stability at all.
Definately no planing, sanding or for that matter painting. I'm actually too scared to even stand near it for fear it will go down in a screaming heap and crush my feet. I guess there is hope for my woodworking hobby after all. There is someone out there who is a worse carpenter than me
It came with the old vice and for 20 bucks I'm sure one day when I have some tools I can make something decent out of it.
Besides the hardwood is RED, my favourite colour.
Cheers

That's a good price for some hardwood or a vice. You've done well scoring both for a lobster.
Let the bench build beginThose were the droids I was looking for.

Good score on the bench. Before you do any work on that vice check out how the tops of the front and back faces are not lining up. It could be that the whole thing is loose and just needs tightening up but it could also be twisted permanently out of shape. If it's the latter it is usually very hard work to get them back into line and often not worth persisting with. Also check for cracks in the cast components.

Sheet the back & sides with ply, that will firm it up.
Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Twenty bucks well spent. Now for the hard part!

I will second what Cliff said about sheeting the back and sides. You could also add a board as a front apron if it still wracks when planeing but only if it needs it. Get a vice on it and ready to go.
Regards
John

And it would fit perfectly in a Hyundai Excel.
Or the other way around.

Hello all
I'm afraid I'm a little too fussie for this old girl, so I stripped it down and salvage the tops.
I'll keep collectimg timber and build me one of those fancy ones. It's got to be red though.
Struth, just spent 2 days reading Groggy's build. Now thats a bench. Hope it doesn't take that long though.
Got some photo's from the net for some designs that I like....Not sure if I am allowed to put them up....?
Thought about changing the title of this thread but as I still haven't started I'll leave it as is.
Cheers
